Objectives

NEST- Navigating Economic & Financial Literacy Skills for Tomorrow is a training course happening in Madrid that will involve 28 youth workers from from 7 European countries (Spain, Portugal, Serbia, Greece, Romania, the North Macedonia, and Czechia) for over 40 hours of non-formal learning and competence development. Aims to transform youth workers into the most supporting individuals on young people's path to financial autonomy and to teach them how to be active citizens across Europe. Currently, data shows that young people from Spain lack financial literacy skills, having real impacts in their lives. OECD/PISA 2022 confirms that Spanish 15-year-olds score below the OECD average in financial literacy. The 2023 Eurobarometer on financial literacy shows that Spain is among the least financially literate countries, with a rate of 19% (Eurobarometer 2023) of its population considered literate. The project responds to pressing needs identified among youth workers and young people. Many professionals lack engaging, adaptable methods to introduce young people to budgeting, saving, responsible consumption, entrepreneurship, and online financial safety. Financial literacy is a key competence for emancipation and employability, yet it often remains abstract, inaccessible or intimidating for young people, particularly those facing socio-economic barriers, rural isolation, migrant backgrounds or disability. Through experiential learning, non-formal education, simulations, role-plays, and study visits to innovative youth organisations and social enterprises, participants will explore how to foster financial literacy and personal development among young people. They will co-design a NEST Toolkit with 6 NFE activities, develop 7 follow-up project ideas, and disseminate outcomes through vlogs and local multiplier events. The project’s objectives: - Implement a high-quality 7-day international Training Course in Madrid encompassing 40+ hours of non-formal training for 28 youth workers from 7 countries: Spain, Portugal, Serbia, Greece, Romania, the North Macedonia, and Czechia, to strengthen their competencies in financial literacy, youth empowerment, and entrepreneurship. - Strengthen youth workers’ capacity to guide young people towards financial independence and employability by equipping them with concrete tools for teaching financial literacy, digital/green entrepreneurship, digital youth work and life planning skills. - Raise awareness among youth workers of financial literacy’s crucial role in supporting youth autonomy and social inclusion. - Develop youth workers’ transversal competences (facilitation, teamwork, intercultural communication, critical thinking, problem-solving, partnership building) through group challenges, simulations, debates, intercultural teamwork, and reflection processes. - Expose participants to good practices in Madrid’s youth, entrepreneurship, and social economy ecosystem by organising study visits to innovative local youth organisations and social enterprises. - Support youth workers co-designing 6 non-formal education activities and 7 new KA1 project proposals and post on SALTO Youth, allowing partners, their organisations and other EU organisations to empower youth in making informed financial decisions. - Support Estrellas de Europa’s mission as a cross-regional federation by gathering good practices and inputs from partner organisations, strengthening the federation’s capacity as a hub for European cooperation in inclusion, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy. Expected Outcomes: Participants will return ready to simplify complex financial concepts into learning experiences through role-plays, escape rooms and life simulation. As such, youth workers will become able to facilitate workshops on any relevant topic on financial literacy (consumer rights, digital payments, and micro-entrepreneurship) while integrating participation methods that empower young people to act as active decision-makers. Moreover, enhanced organizational capacity through peer learning and material development, improving their high-quality financial education programs. The Youthpass process will be used to document and recognize these people's competence development, which backs up their employability and personal growth. Finally, each trained youth worker is expected to reach 20–30 young people through direct programmes or regular contact, generating a multiplier effect with a potential impact on 560–840 young people across all partner countries. Additionally, the NEST toolkit will further expand this reach, considering its dissemination throughout 350+ European organizations. This approach addresses the identified needs from Estrategia Juventud 2030 and EU Youth Goals on employment, participation and inclusion, by aiming to build youth work capacity to answer to financial literacy challenges affecting young people on their life transitions.
