Through this youth project, we aim to implement a strong educational initiative that will allow young people to explore the history and legacy of slavery, understand the related issues of memory and citizenship, and contribute to the fight against racism and discrimination based on origin. The exchange, which will take place in Réunion from May 3 to 10, 2026, in collaboration with a Portuguese partner, will offer participants a unique intercultural and civic learning experience rooted in a territory deeply marked by this history.** **The project aspires to provide young people with a deeper understanding of historical realities, to develop their sensitivity to human rights, and to strengthen their critical thinking by analyzing the social, economic, and cultural consequences of slavery on contemporary societies. Beyond knowledge acquisition, it will foster the development of transversal skills such as communication, cooperation, research, and analysis, while boosting self-confidence and teamwork abilities. The planned activities will be based on historical trails once used by escaped slaves, serving as a guiding thread to explore the theme. Participants will visit historical sites, take part in educational workshops, and collaborate on research projects, combining field experiences, collective reflection, and intercultural exchange. This approach will encourage diverse perspectives and help create lasting connections between French and Portuguese participants. The expected outcomes of this experience are manifold: a better understanding of the history of slavery and its impacts, enhanced empathy and civic awareness, increased openness to civic engagement at both local and European levels, and the acquisition of valuable skills for the participants’ personal, academic, and professional development. By promoting knowledge, remembrance, and action, we hope to contribute to the formation of conscious, united, and value-driven European citizens.
