Objectives

The inspiration for the choice of theme and location for the project comes from the repeated actions combining social prevention and cultural education undertaken by the MALFAMÉ Association in Saint-Étienne. Saint-Étienne is a city facing numerous social issues, where phenomena such as exclusion, poverty, and unemployment are particularly felt. In this socially challenging region, MALFAMÉ aims to develop the interests of young people who wish to engage with film practices and creation on a voluntary and associative basis. Already active within the city and conducting educational and transmission events, it is within this framework that young people, inspired by the mission of partner organizations and initiatives undertaken by their older peers, proposed to carry out an international youth exchange dedicated to practicing and learning the art of filmmaking, which can effectively influence public attitudes and counter certain socially negative phenomena. As part of the project, the young participants plan to conduct research in partner countries on cultural film products that have a significant pro-social dimension. These productions advocate against intolerance, combat social threats and issues, and carry out their own social campaigns based on cinema. In this socially difficult region, MALFAMÉ organizes a summer film event called GLOBAL FRAMES SAINT-ÉTIENNE, which is unprecedented in Europe. A unique partnership with the city’s infrastructures allows for the creation of a valuable cultural offering as part of this event, as well as the development of an innovative educational program achieved through learning film creation. For several years, MALFAMÉ has enabled young people to collaborate directly with cultural sector professionals. Indeed, in recent years, young people, aided by increasingly accessible video creation tools such as smartphones, have increasingly expressed their desire to produce video content, despite not having access to training and/or dedicated equipment that would allow them to further explore their cinematic experimentation. They have thus created short cinematic forms dedicated to preventing these issues, presented in the form of documentaries, social advertisements, and short film studies. Various audiovisual works created within this collaboration have been widely used in social campaigns in Poland and in partner countries, encouraging successive groups of young people to undertake their own international initiatives using modern tools. GLOBAL FRAMES SAINT-ÉTIENNE is a specialized peer film education program for students in Saint-Étienne. The project’s name refers to the desire to create a tolerant Europe together, where there will be no social tolerance for discrimination based on gender, ethnic origin, religion, or other social differences. Its objective is to teach young people a conscious reception of cinematic works (discussion, analysis, critical viewing skills). The most important element of the project is a cycle of modern workshops and practical exercises in various film disciplines (screenwriting, directing, production organization, shooting, editing), during which young people independently create their first cinematic works in the form of short films. Throughout the project, young participants will attend workshops led by film professionals in all sectors related to film creation (editing, sound, camera, acting, etc.) to develop their own content as a team. They will work in conjunction with project leaders to organize work sessions and create a schedule to complete their short film within the allotted time. The name of the project GLOBAL FRAMES SAINT-ÉTIENNE refers to the desire to create together, internationally, while respecting the values of tolerance upheld by Europe, where discrimination based on gender, ethnic origin, religion, or other social differences has no place. The project is made by and for young people and carries a message of open-mindedness, opposing the spread of hate, online hate, and the stigmatization of people with differing opinions or backgrounds. During the project, young people will engage with audiovisual content aligned with these essential principles, while developing their creative aspirations, which they will share online at the end of the workshop.
