Objectives

Across our partner network we see the same gap: many youth workers want to use the outdoors to cultivate teamwork, problem-solving, decision-making and leadership, yet they lack the confidence, methods, safety frameworks and inclusive adaptations to do so-especially with young people facing fewer opportunities (economic, geographic, migrant and health-related barriers). At the same time, organisations are seeking credible ways to foster nature connection and sustainability competences in response to climate anxiety, and to translate outdoor learning into regular, accessible activities in their communities. This project answers those needs by building capacity in outdoor education and by transferring that capacity into day-to-day youth work practice. In Balance with Nature is a long-term training course (LTTC) for 27 youth workers (plus 3 trainers) from France, Hungary, Poland, Czechia, Norway, Germany, Italy, Estonia and Croatia. It consists of two 7-day mobilities with a mentored practice phase in between: • TC1 – In Balance with Nature (Generic), Lisieux, France, 2–8 June 2026: builds a shared foundation in outdoor pedagogy and experiential learning, with a strong focus on soft-skills facilitation (teamwork, problem-solving, decision-making, leadership), inclusion in the outdoors, and sustainability competences (Leave No Trace, biodiversity, climate literacy, nature connection). • Practice phase, June–August 2026: each participant pilots at least one inclusive local outdoor activity and gathers evidence of learning and impact. • TC2 – In Balance with Nature (in Youth Work), Volda, Norway, 2–8 September 2026: focuses on transfer—designing safe, inclusive outdoor programmes in organisational settings; developing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for risk and safeguarding; and establishing balanced ways to incorporate outdoor programmes into regular youth work practice. Objectives: O1. to build the capacity among youth workers and educators to implement outdoor education activities : after TC1, 100% can name/facilitate ≥5 outdoor experiential methods; 75% can design a workshop using outdoor activity with explicit learning outcomes. O2. to learn how to use outdoor education approach as a powerful tool for soft skill development: : ≥80% report improved ability to facilitate teamwork, problem-solving, decision-making and leadership (self- and trainer-rated). O3. Advance inclusion in the outdoors: each participant co-designs at least one adaptation for young people with fewer opportunities (mobility/health, socio-economic, migrant, rural) and applies it during the practice phase. O4. Foster sustainability competences and appreciation for nature: ≥80% demonstrate growth in green knowledge, attitudes and behaviours; each creates an eco-responsible activity plan. O5. Ensure transfer to practice: each participant implements at least one local outdoor activity (across practice and follow-up) reaching ≥8 young people (≥40% with fewer opportunities). O6. Achieve organisational impact: each partner integrates ≥2 improvements (e.g., safety procedures, inclusion tools , green practices, new outdoor activities) into regular youth work.
