The “United Through Sports” youth exchange aims to bring young people from different backgrounds closer together through the power of sport, while promoting the understanding and experience of European values – such as solidarity, equal opportunities, inclusion, and cooperation. The program was born as a result of a previous Erasmus+ project, during which the participants deeply felt what the experience of “European unity” means. They wish to pass on this experience to others, especially in connection with Europe Day, which celebrates the unity and diversity of the continent. From the perspective of youth work, the project is an important response to current social challenges affecting young people: alienation, inactivity, and the lack of community experiences. Non-formal learning methods – especially education through sport (ETS) – provide participants with the opportunity to acquire, in an experiential way, the skills necessary for active citizenship, coexistence, and social responsibility. During the project, young people take part in various physical, mental, and social activities, where their communication skills, self-awareness, and attitude toward teamwork improve, and they gain insight into the functioning and core values of the EU, particularly in the fields of youth, sport, and inclusion. A key part of the program is the Europe Day event organized by the participants, where they present what they have learned through sports activities. The project pays special attention to the inclusion of disadvantaged youth, for whom the exchange is not only a learning opportunity but also a chance to step out of their usual environment, gain new motivation, self-confidence, and a meaningful European experience. Thus, “United Through Sports” is not only a sports program but an inspiring learning journey that contributes to raising conscious, inclusive, and responsible European citizens.
