Objectives

By implementing this project, we aimed to create a meaningful European youth exchange experience that would broaden the horizons of young people in Ballyfermot and strengthen their sense of belonging as European citizens. We wanted to provide them with the opportunity to meet and engage directly with other young people from across Europe, share experiences, and learn from one another in a spirit of openness, equality, and mutual respect. A key goal of the project was to challenge racism and stereotypes by promoting intercultural dialogue and solidarity. In light of recent events, including the riots in Dublin, we recognised the importance of fostering compassion and understanding within our community, particularly towards refugees and migrants. We wanted to highlight that young people can be powerful advocates for inclusion, diversity, and respect. We also sought to address the limited opportunities that some young people from socio-economically disadvantaged communities have to travel and experience life beyond their immediate environment. While social media provides global access, we believe that face-to-face encounters are far more impactful in shaping attitudes, values, and personal development. Through direct cultural exchange, participants were able to see how others live, experience different traditions and foods, and build genuine friendships across borders. The specific objectives of the project were to: Increase young people’s knowledge and understanding of immigration and cultural diversity within Europe. Strengthen their understanding of what it means to be a European citizen. Build their confidence and awareness of their rights and responsibilities as citizens of Europe. Expand their knowledge of another European country, including its culture, history, and social context. Promote cultural learning through direct engagement and shared activities. Develop social, interpersonal, and communication skills. Encourage young people to express their own visions, hopes, and dreams for the future of Europe. Overall, the project aimed to empower young people to become more open-minded, confident, and socially aware individuals, while fostering a stronger sense of solidarity, community, and shared European identity. Our project connected with a number of the European youth goals in particular : Connecting EU with Youth, Equality of All Genders, Inclusive Societies, information & Constructive Dialogue, Space and Participation for All Youth Organisations & European Programmes "The EU Youth Strategy is the framework for EU youth policy cooperation for 2019-2027, based on the Council Resolution of 26 November 2018. EU youth cooperation shall make the most of youth policy's potential. It fosters youth participation in democratic life; it also supports social and civic engagement and aims to ensure that all young people have the necessary resources to take part in society." This project clearly linked with the above strategy in that it empowered young people to engage with democratic life and civic engagement by working with community organisations in promoting tolerance and equality. This was by far the most important aspect of this project , allowing the young people space and creativity to express positive views with minorities within our community including the local traveller community. By being a model of working together it embowed the young people to take ownership and promotes this model of civic engagement particularly from disadvantaged young people . The project also met the goal of encouraging and promoting inclusive democratic participation of all young people in society and democratic processes; Raising young people's awareness about European common values and fundamental rights that contribute to the European integration process, including through contribution to the achievement of one or more of the EU Youth Goals This exchange brought young people together from Poland and Ireland whose countries have seen huge migration in the last few years particularly since the Ukraine war. It gave the young people time and space through non formal methods to develop their understanding of the changing world and in particular how valuing European values can benefit us all. We wanted young people to challenge the narrative of right wing campaigners about migration into Ireland as a negative on society. we also looked at the positive role immigrants make to our health service and without them we would be a much poorer country. By visiting Auschwitz Museum it brought home to our young people how intolerance and hate for minorities can have a devastating effect on people.
