Objectives

The overarching aim of this project is to empower young people from disadvantaged and marginalised backgrounds, particularly those engaged in the Youth Diversion Programme and from the Traveller community, to explore identity, culture, and values through a creative, intercultural lens. By drawing on mythology, history, and civil rights traditions, the project will provide participants with new ways of understanding themselves, their community, and their place in Europe. Objectives: Promote personal growth and self-confidence: Support young people to develop a stronger sense of identity and pride, recognising that their culture and history are valuable contributions to society. Explore myths and shared values: Use Greek, Roman, and Celtic mythology to spark discussions about justice, equality, resilience, and human dignity. These stories provide a powerful framework to help young people reflect on their own lives and the challenges they face, making abstract values more concrete and relatable. Connect with history and civil rights: Encourage participants to draw parallels between mythological struggles for justice and real-world struggles for civil rights and equality, including those faced by the Traveller community and other marginalised groups across Europe. This helps young people understand that their experiences are part of a wider human story of resilience and resistance. Strengthen intercultural awareness, cultural pride, and solidarity: Provide space for young people to engage with their peers across Europe, learning about different cultures while proudly sharing their Traveller heritage through storytelling, music, and oral tradition. At the same time, the project will foster national pride by highlighting the richness of Irish and Celtic mythology, linking it with the broader European tradition of myth-making. This will allow participants to see their own culture as an equal and respected part of Europe’s shared history. Encourage active citizenship and voice: Equip participants with skills in communication, leadership, and teamwork, enabling them to speak out on issues that matter to them and contribute positively to their communities. Offer positive alternatives to exclusion: Through structured, creative, and reflective activities, channel energy away from disengagement or anti-social behaviour, promoting pro-social engagement, resilience, and hope for the future. In youth work practice, this project is not only about travel or cultural exchange, but about using history, myth, and the legacy of civil rights to inspire young people to imagine new possibilities for themselves. It aims to show them that they are part of a much larger story of justice, equality, and human dignity — and that their culture, traditions, and voices matter in shaping both their own communities and Europe’s shared future.
