Objectives

Having recently partnered together to deliver a Sustainable and Cultural Walk in Mallorca, it became clear to all youth workers from both receiving youth organisations that Belvedere Youth Club and CASAL de joves are in their own ways based in highly socio-economic disadvantaged areas, with a severe shortage of opportunities for their young residents. The overall aim of the project is to continuing bridging cultures and building friendships between out young people between our young people from Belvedere Youth Club which is situated within Dublin’s North East Inner City (NEIC) and the young people of Ajuntament de Santa Maria del Camí Youth Club situated in Santa Maria Spain because for many of our young people in today’s rapidly changing world of social, technological and economic shifts they face a distinctive mix of challenges and barriers which limit their opportunities to connect with other young people from different cultural and social backgrounds outside of their own immediate community. Dublin’s Northeast Inner City (NEIC) is an area with high levels of social and economic disadvantage, where our young people are often affected by issues such as early school leaving, unemployment, and exposure to antisocial behaviour. Challenges such as these can often lead to isolation, low confidence, and a lack of positive role models or international experiences. Santa Maria the rural town in Mallorca within which the of Ajuntament de Santa Maria del Camí Youth Club is situated has a significantly lower population of 7,623. While beautiful living in a scarcely populated rural town can bring with it many social and emotional challenges for its societies younger members, for example there is limited chances to meet people their own age resulting in feelings of isolation from their peers’ groups. There is also diversity compared to larger towns because of the fewer cultural events and exposure to different cultural viewpoints. Through this youth mobility project, we aim to address these needs by focusing on bridging cultures and building friendships. Some of the key issues which we want to address are low confidence and aspirations amongst our young people for many of them do not see any positive opportunities for themselves beyond what is within their local area, which can often times lead to social isolation and limited networks, many of our young people have never travelled abroad or met other young people from different cultural or social economic backgrounds outside of the inner city. Leading to a level of division and misunderstanding both within the Northeast Inner City (NEIC) and internationally, lack of knowledge and understanding of cultural differences can lead to negative stereotypes and mistrust. It is hoped that through Bridging Cultures-Building Friendships within this youth mobility we as youth workers can empower young people from Dublin’s Northeast Inner City (NEIC) and Spain’s Ajuntament de Santa Maria del Camí Youth Club to become confident, curious, and connected European citizens. For this to happen we would like to implement our project in an informal manner using nonformal educational methods and activities to achieve the following specific objectives. To learn and discuss different definitions of culturalism and belonging (according to perspectives of youth and European Institutions). To create/ improve new artistical ways as a tool for inclusion To train/ inform youth workers and our young people on human rights and the inclusion of identity and belonging and interculturalism in them and the priorities of the European Union and the Council of Europe. To develop critical thinking regarding how sense of loneliness and isolation regarding to our environment can affect young people and children in our societies. To increase an awareness of interculturalism and positive friendships and how acts of racism of discrimination can affect all races, ethnicities, religions and gender. To promote active participation and critical thinking To offer the opportunity for our young people and youth workers to meet in person and develop concreate ideas for future projects focusing on cultural diversity and active participation To support youth workers to increase their knowledge of Erasmus + Programmes and youth projects in order to develop new projects in the future.
