This youth exchange involves 30 young people from 5 countries – Italy, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia and North Macedonia – 26 of whom face fewer opportunities. The exchange will last 8 days and will take place in Italy, in the hinterland of Genoa. The young participants will work on the theme of the environmental and social impact of fast fashion, the ultra-fast fashion industry strongly consumed especially by teenagers, characterized by the rapid and low-cost production of clothing items. The project generates from the activities on environmental issues organized by La Dimora Accogliente, during which the topic of fast fashion was also addressed and attracted their interest. They proposed to try to build up a project that would allow them to work and go deeper on the impact of fast fashion. The staff of La Dimora welcomed the idea and suggested involving some partners they had successfully worked with in previous Erasmus projects, particularly those focused on environmental issues, including the informal group from North Macedonia based in Shtip, the most important textile production center in the country. This marked the beginning of a shared design process with the partners. The objectives of the project are: • To increase participants’ awareness of fast fashion and its heavy environmental, social, and health impacts • To promote behavioral change among participants, encouraging them to make more sustainable consumer choices, reducing fast fashion purchases and opting for more durable and ethical alternatives • To provide participants with the tools to become critical and informed consumers, able to evaluate the impact of their purchases • To equip participants with the tools to become agents of change, by writing and disseminating a set of rules – a “decalogue” – to modify their daily lifestyle and promote it among their peers and community. Through non-formal education activities based mainly on learning by doing and peer education, the young people will learn how, where, and under what conditions the clothes they buy online or in multinational fast fashion chains are produced, and with what consequences for the environment, especially in developing countries. They will also increase their knowledge of EU environmental protection policies and reflect on how to change their daily behaviors by writing a set of rules – a decalogue – for more sustainable clothing purchases. They will take an active role with their peers and communities by committing to spreading the decalogue during post-project dissemination activities. During the exchange, participants will be hosted at the social and educational farm of La Dimora Accogliente and, through sharing daily life, will acquire a set of personal skills such as the ability to mediate between their own needs and those of others, adapt to new situations and a multicultural context, work in teams, solve unexpected problems, respect others and the rules of communal living. They will get to know cultures different from their own, becoming more tolerant towards those who are “different from them” and will build friendships with peers that will last over time. The partner organizations will strengthen their international network, increasing opportunities for future collaboration; the staff will have the chance to work with colleagues experienced in other educational contexts, enriching their skills and knowledge of methodologies and operational practices, especially concerning young people with fewer opportunities.
