Objectives

Young people represent a strategic resource for Europe's future, yet in many rural and small-scale contexts, such as Pignola in Basilicata, where our Association was founded, opportunities for personal development, active participation, and well-being remain limited. The region faces significant socioeconomic challenges, including high levels of inequality and youth marginalization, a lack of adequate sports facilities, and limited educational and recreational programs. These conditions increase the risk of social isolation, low self-esteem, and limited ability for young people to contribute to their communities. In Pignola, young people's needs were identified through questionnaires administered directly to local school students, a tool that allowed us to gather information on their needs, expectations, and daily challenges. Similar situations are found in the contexts of our international partners. In Malta, Victoria Hotspurs F.C. identified young people's needs using the same method adopted by the applicant Association, identifying the need for safe and stimulating spaces in which to develop their physical and mental well-being, socialize, and acquire skills needed to actively participate in social and cultural life. In Spain, GRUPO FUTNET Burriana identified young people's needs using methods similar to those of the other partners, which allowed them to understand their integration challenges, limited access to mobility opportunities, and the demand for training programs to develop personal and social skills. Sport thus becomes an effective tool for personal growth, social inclusion, and active citizenship, fully consistent with the priorities of the European Union, which promotes youth mobility, youth empowerment, and intercultural exchange. Through targeted sports activities, international mobility programs, and intercultural workshops, young participants can improve their physical and psychological well-being, develop skills such as leadership, critical thinking, collaboration, and emotion management, and experience responsibility and a sense of belonging. The project aims to foster inclusion and active participation by creating environments in which young people play a central role, contributing to the planning, management, and evaluation of activities. This centrality allows them to feel like agents of change, motivated to actively participate, and become informed citizens capable of positively influencing their communities. At the same time, the project's intercultural and European dimension offers young people the opportunity to engage with diverse realities, understand and value cultural and social differences, and build networks that strengthen social cohesion and a sense of European citizenship. The project responds to the real and urgent needs of young people in the participating regions, improving their physical and psychological well-being, promoting social and intercultural inclusion, developing personal and intercultural skills, and strengthening ties between local and European communities. Sport, in this context, is not just a physical activity, but a vehicle for conveying fundamental values, generating positive change, and offering young people concrete tools to become active, responsible, and aware citizens, capable of contributing to more inclusive, cohesive, and resilient societies.
