Objectives

Venice, with its unique historical, cultural, and ecological heritage, is facing serious environmental, social, and economic challenges. Rising sea levels, frequent “acqua alta” events, and the fragile lagoon ecosystem put the city at high risk. Extreme floods, like the 1.87 m tide in November 2019, caused major damage to historical landmarks, disrupted local communities, and threatened socio-economic stability. Environmental pressures are compounded by social and governance issues. Large-scale projects like Mo.S.E. have concentrated resources in a few solutions, often excluding local communities and small-scale interventions. Pollution from diesel-powered vaporetti and industrial activities further endangers the city’s sustainability. At the same time, Venice faces depopulation, over-tourism, and social-economic imbalances. While initiatives like the Venice World Sustainability Capital Foundation aim to promote sustainability, local, youth-driven actions are often more effective in fostering resilience, inclusion, and environmental awareness. This context makes Venice a unique “living classroom” for young people to learn about climate adaptation, sustainable urban mobility, and community-based solutions, while developing intercultural and social skills. Our main aim is to empower young people to act for climate change and water justice by raising awareness, building resilience, and promoting sustainable solutions through the Youth Charter on Water and Climate Resilience. Specific Objectives: 1.To raise awareness on the link between climate change and water justice. 2.To equip young people with practical tools and skills to take action in their communities. 3.To foster international cooperation and co-create the Youth Charter on Water and Climate Resilience.
