The Pancha-tantra project builds on the ESC Daydreamers initiative, where young participants discovered the power of imagination to strengthen resilience, enthusiasm, and confidence in the future. A key activity took place in primary schools in Pietramelara, where children with migrant backgrounds shared fairy tales and stories from their own cultures. Among the stories, the Pancha-tantra, an ancient Indian collection of educational fables featuring symbolic animals, inspired children to create drawings and comic sketches, while young participants recognized the universal messages conveyed by myths and legends, fostering creativity, dialogue, and personal growth. This experience motivated the youth to continue the work, expanding it through an Erasmus+ Youth Exchange, adapted to the needs of rural areas in Pietramelara and surrounding small towns. Main needs and challenges identified: Youth in rural and disadvantaged areas – In small towns, geographic isolation, limited educational and cultural opportunities, and population decline (ANCI: around 3,000 municipalities at risk by 2040) reduce prospects for young people. The project aims to build resilience, initiative, and the ability to imagine alternative paths. Intercultural dialogue and exchange – In Italy, students with migrant backgrounds make up 11–15% of the school population (ISTAT) and are at risk of marginalization or school dropout. Traditional fairy tales and myths provide effective tools for promoting inclusion and reducing prejudice, as demonstrated by international experiences. Promoting reading and conscious social media use – Reading improves focus, memory, critical thinking, empathy, and creativity, yet only 35% of Italian youth read regularly. The project promotes reading universal stories as a creative alternative to passive social media use. Imagination and creativity for NEET youth – Over one-third of Italian youth are NEET, and about 78% lack a clear life plan (ISTAT). Imagination, stimulated through stories and creative tools, helps develop resilience, courage, and initiative, allowing young people to envision new futures. Main objectives: Stimulate imagination and creativity, strengthening resilience and initiative, with special focus on rural areas and disadvantaged youth; Promote intercultural dialogue through the exchange of myths, fairy tales, and legends, encouraging inclusion and overcoming prejudice; Foster reading and non-formal education, promoting conscious and balanced social media use; Engage NEET youth or those uncertain about their future, providing tools to imagine a positive future and act with confidence.
