The Gun That Can Only Plays BANG! is a youth exchange that stems from continuous local and transnational work with young people on the theme of youth empowerment in the face of violence and war. The exchange involves three territories that are experiencing or have experienced situations of war and violence: the Ukrainian region of Sumy, the Diyarbakır region in Turkey (predominantly Kurdish-populated), and the Occupied Palestinian Territories (West Bank). The exchange was created for and with 20 young people aged 17 to 21 and their respective group leaders who come from these territories, and 5 young people from Italy who, while not living in a war context, have experienced violence and marginalization (they belong to minorities and suffer multiple forms of discrimination). The needs of youth in conflict settings, therefore, go beyond recovery from trauma. The young people have asked us for opportunities to reclaim their own narratives, to be seen as more than victims or threats, and to engage as active citizens and knowledge creators. To achieve this, we have chosen to experiment in this exchange with a tool, civic theatre, and an "attitude," irony. The Exchange Aims to: Build a space for learning about oneself and others from an intercultural perspective, recognizing parts of one's own experience in the experiences of others, and overcoming stereotypes and prejudices. Create a "space of courage" where young people with fewer opportunities and from complex backgrounds can share their stories and relate positively to themselves and others. Promote the personal and social competences of the young participants through theatre. Develop lateral and creative thinking by training an "ironic" view of reality. Promote active participation in democratic life through the collective creation of an artistic product. The Gun That Can Only Go BANG! supports the objectives of the Erasmus+ Programme because it offers a quality non-formal learning opportunity with a particular focus on young people with fewer opportunities. It places tools related to creativity and self-expression at its core to promote active participation and discussion on themes that are socially relevant in this historical period, especially for the young people involved.
