The project “BIKE-UP! Sustainable Mobility in Ferrara” will use the bicycle as an educational tool to engage young people in urban mobility, environmental sustainability, inclusion, and active citizenship. Ferrara, a city with a strong cycling identity, will become an open-air laboratory: participants will observe policies, infrastructures, and everyday practices that can be replicated in their own territories, turning the bicycle into a critical lens through which to interpret lifestyles and individual choices related to climate, air quality, and social cohesion. BIKE-UP! will strengthen young people’s awareness of the mobility crisis, showing how everyday choices directly impact the environment and health. From the perspective of youth work, the project will guide participants through a non-formal learning path combining direct experience, reflection, and the production of useful outputs. The objectives, as stated in the application, are to: raise environmental awareness and encourage sustainable mobility behaviors; highlight the inclusive and intercultural dimension of the bicycle as a symbol of accessibility and empowerment; empower young people as active citizens capable of advocacy; develop transversal competences (teamwork, communication, leadership, problem-solving) and green skills related to conscious bike use and urban space analysis. The project will adopt non-formal education and experiential learning methods. Participants will engage in workshops such as Climate Bingo and Safety on Wheels, linking mobility choices to health and the environment; in creative formats like Wheels of Change and the co-design of “The Ideal City – Governing the Future”, which will turn ideas into proposals; in role plays and field research (Voices from Ferrara) to train leadership and advocacy; and in thematic sessions on gender and mobility (Gender & Bike – Freedom on Two Wheels) and accessibility (Bikes for All). Debriefing moments and the Youthpass will support the recognition of learning outcomes. Alignment with Erasmus+ and the European Youth Goals will be ensured through activities such as the Urban Bike Tour, Bike & SDGs Challenge, and Energy from Bikes, enabling participants to experience the impact of active mobility and connect it to the SDGs. Daily organization will also reflect sustainability (reducing single-use materials, using local and seasonal food, waste separation). The exchange will consist of 7 days of activities in Ferrara (plus travel), with around 6 hours per day combining practical, theoretical, reflective, and creative sessions. Urban and rural Bike Tours will transform the territory into a learning space, while intercultural evenings will promote human exchange and dialogue among delegations. A digital dimension will support documentation and reflection (collaborative boards, live polls, CO₂ estimation apps), and the entire process will be collected in a shared digital archive. Follow-up webinars (within 1 and 3 months) will present local actions and results, keeping the transnational network active. All participants will use virtual components. The bicycle will be emphasized as a democratic and accessible means of transport, capable of giving autonomy to young people with fewer opportunities. Dedicated activities will focus on disability, age, and family needs. Young people will exercise active citizenship through public interviews, Green Debates, awareness campaigns, and local recommendations. A safety protocol, staff support during mobility, and logistics consistent with the project theme (hostel accommodation, sustainable meals, mainly cycling-based transport) will be ensured. Throughout the exchange, participants will develop skills in public communication, group leadership, intercultural mediation, critical thinking, and advocacy. They will learn to measure and discuss the environmental impact of their choices (e.g., Bike & SDGs Challenge), to analyze urban spaces, and to co-design solutions. At the end, the Youthpass will certify their learning achievements; participants will practice reverse mentoring towards families and peers and carry forward local actions (workshops, meetings, social campaigns), with monitoring supported by the online community and the shared digital archive.
