The initiative “Out of the Box: Creativity Against Poverty” is a youth exchange aimed at young people living in disadvantaged environments such as urban outskirts and neighborhoods marked by unemployment and crime. In these contexts, many young people lack adequate support and end up perceiving their future as limited to a few options: precarious jobs, migration, or, in the worst cases, illegality. Statistics highlight the urgency: in Italy, nearly one in ten teenagers lives in conditions of severe material deprivation, and many adolescents already contribute financially to their families, often giving up on school, educational opportunities, or social experiences. The widespread NEET phenomenon further illustrates this lack of prospects. The project builds on the experience of “Love in Action” (2023), which revealed that poverty is not only about material shortages but also about internalized beliefs and low self-esteem that generate distrust, resignation, and self-destructive behaviors. During that initiative, psychologists and coaches guided young people to reflect on the link between mindset and poverty, also drawing inspiration from “Think and Grow Rich”, a classic of personal development focused on resilience and self-confidence. Out of the Box aims to provide young people with practical tools to strengthen awareness, motivation, and the ability to imagine new life opportunities. The approach combines three key areas: Think and Grow Rich: coaching modules to reinforce self-esteem, confidence, and goal-setting skills; Volunteering: hands-on solidarity experiences to nurture empathy and community spirit; Social enterprise and creativity: workshops where young people can experiment with entrepreneurial and artistic ideas to generate social impact. The ultimate goal is to foster resilience and initiative, encouraging young people to “think outside the box” and turn the limitations of poverty into opportunities for personal and community growth.
