The BREATHE project responds to a critical and urgent need faced by young people across Europe today: the challenge of maintaining mental and physical wellbeing in increasingly demanding social and economic contexts. Many young people in Europe are currently experiencing high levels of stress, anxiety and emotional exhaustion. People aged 16–29 are more likely than older adults to experience depression and severe anxiety, and around 16% of them report severe anxiety symptoms according to recent research from Nature (2023). The European Parliament (2023) further highlights that rates of mental health problems such as depression, anxiety and loneliness roughly doubled among young people during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, showing how vulnerable this age group is in times of crisis. Alongside these mental health challenges, physical health issues are also becoming more common. According to the European Commission (2024), 16.3% of young people aged 16–29 in the EU report having long-term (chronic) health problems. There is also a striking gender gap: 18.2% of young women in this age group report long-standing health problems compared to 14.5% of young men. This means that many young adults are beginning their adult lives already carrying significant burdens, both mental and physical, that may limit their opportunities for learning, participation, and professional development. Yoga offers a simple, low-cost and inclusive way to respond to this challenge. Scientific evidence demonstrates that regular yoga practice can significantly improve the mental wellbeing of young people. Elstad et al. (2020) found that yoga can reduce psychological distress and improve sleep quality, and that these improvements lasted even three months after the active programme ended. Castellote-Caballero et al. (2024) showed that a 12-week yoga programme led to improvements in emotional wellbeing and reductions in both state and trait anxiety among university students. Chauhan et al. (2025) demonstrated that a 10-week yoga course reduced stress, anxiety and depression while improving overall quality of life in young adults. Qualitative research from Hagen et al. (2023) shows that yoga also helps young people recognise when they need to rest and build healthier daily routines, making it a sustainable tool for long-term wellbeing. The project is guided by the following measurable objectives: O1 – Lower stress and anxiety: By the end of the project, at least 70% of participants will report feeling at least 20% less stressed or anxious than at the start, based on simple pre/post wellbeing surveys. O2 – Improve sleep and energy: At least 65% of participants will report better sleep quality, and 75% will adopt at least one new daily self-care habit (such as breathing, stretching or mindful breaks), recorded in their personal micro-diaries. O3 – Build wellbeing skills: 100% of participants will co-create the BREATHE Resource Pack, which will include 10 youth-made yoga videos, 15 visual cue cards, and a 15-page multilingual beginner guide with safe practice tips and progress checklists. O4 – Reach more young people: Within 3 months after the exchange, each of the 6 partner countries will organise 2 local follow-up yoga activities, each reaching 20 new local young people and 5 youth workers, for a total of 240 young people and 60 youth workers (300 people in total). Youth workers will learn how to use the BREATHE methods with their own youth groups. O5 – Spread the message: The project will reach at least 10,000 people online (through social media posts, shared videos, and partner websites) and generate at least 500 meaningful interactions (likes, comments, shares, saves) to prove active engagement. Each partner has a strong role in achieving these objectives: EPIONE will ensure high-quality wellbeing education models, VulcanicaMente will bring expertise in mindfulness and eco-somatic methods, Karate Klub Metalurg will link physical wellbeing with emotional regulation, Future Generations GR will test inclusive methods with unemployed and rural youth, MTÜ EUnexus will ensure accessibility for disadvantaged youth, and Diverse Together will focus on intercultural storytelling and creative dissemination. Together, we want to carry out this project because it offers young people across Europe a chance to care for themselves, connect across cultures, and build healthier, more resilient futures.
