The Authentic Voices youth exchange was born out of the initiative of five enthusiastic young people and the powerful shared experience, where participants struggling with life transitions and mental health challenges discovered the unifying force of singing and chanting. Through this evening practice, they found calmness, inspiration, and a deep sense of belonging. We noticed how such experiences built trust within the group, encouraged individuals to step forward more confidently, and sparked curiosity to explore the wider potential of voice, sound, and body practices. Discussions with young people revealed that many feel disconnected from their voice, emotions, and identity, experiencing shyness, fear of judgment, and social pressure, especially amplified by social media. This disconnection affects their confidence, presence, and ability to engage authentically with others. To understand these issues better, we did research and created our own survey. The results reflected that more than half of respondents often hold back from expressing themselves even with family and friends out of fear of being judged, and a similar number reported feeling excluded from groups because of low confidence or personal fears. Combined with the challenges of early adulthood such as transitioning from education to work, starting first jobs or higher studies, and forming first relationships, it became clear how serious the struggles are. Stress, disconnection, loneliness, and uncertainty often lead to withdrawal, isolation, and in worst cases, self harm and suicidal thoughts. This shows the urgent need for spaces that help young people reconnect with themselves and others in supportive, practical, and creative ways. We created Authentic Voices as a response to this need. The project is designed to empower young people by giving them practical tools to reconnect with themselves, express their emotions, and build stronger connections with their communities. Instead of giving new knowledge or advice, we want to create an experience where participants can use simple, always available resources like their voice, body, and creativity as tools for expression, emotional release, and connection with themselves and communities they are part of. The project will provide a safe and inclusive space where they can step outside their comfort zones, test their fears of judgment or comparison, and realize that they already carry valuable resources within themselves. Through this process, participants will strengthen their courage, confidence, and ability to build lives rooted in choice and inner strength rather than fear or pressure. Based on our research, discussions, and experiences in youth work, and taking into account Erasmus+ priorities, we have defined the following main objectives: 1) Empower 33 youngsters with tools, methods, and practices for self-regulation to develop their ability to take care of their long term mental well being. 2) Develop valuable and employable skills such as resilience, confidence, public speaking, communication, teamwork, creativity, cultural awareness and emotional intelligence to stimulate growth in their personal and professional lives. 3) Help young people identify and strengthen their inner resources, raising awareness of the skills, capacities, and qualities they already carry within. 4) Create a safe and inclusive community of young people from diverse backgrounds, where differences in their opinions, expressions, and habits are accepted, acknowledged and valued, strengthening a sense of belonging and inclusion. 5) Explore and raise awareness on how practices based in voice, music, body, and improvisation theater can support young people to express themselves, build confidence, and courage to take risks. 6) To raise awareness about Erasmus+ opportunities and inspire young people to get involved by sharing information, educational resources, and personal experiences. Through these objectives, Authentic Voices will promote values central to youth work - participation, personal growth, and inclusion. Young people will be active co-creators of the program, contributing their ideas and creativity, and experiencing intercultural exchange through collaboration with peers from different backgrounds. They will gain skills not only relevant for their personal and professional development but also transferable to their communities, strengthening their role as active citizens in Europe. By implementing Authentic Voices, we want to show young people that they are not alone, that they belong, and that they have powerful tools within themselves. We aim to create a transformative learning space where their voices (literally and metaphorically) can be heard, strengthening both individual well-being and collective connection.
