Objectives

Practicing Coaching & Guiding was created to share our long-term experience in youth work with youngsters with fewer opportunities. We have reached impressive results with our target group: From 37 participants facing heavy fewer opportunities (and having more than 2 separate disadvantages), after our multiple-month guidance, 18 found a job, 6 started studying, 5 started their own business. Additional benefits were overcoming burnout or mental health issues, having a relationship for the first time, being able to interact with their peers, moving out of their difficult situation to a different country, and even having the necessary life skills to live independently for the first time. As a youth centre working with this since 1966, we want to pass on our expertise, so more youth workers, organizations and disadvantaged youngsters can benefit from it. Our partners have repeatedly expressed the need to learn how to coach, guide and mentor disadvantaged youngsters. Another need is to learn how to do it sustainably: working with larger groups on day-to-day basis, being able to offer personalized approach, and do that without burning out. Furthermore, PC&G responds to a clear and urgent need within European youth work: many youth workers enter the field without formal education or structured training and often feel unprepared to work effectively with young people facing fewer opportunities, while also safeguarding their own wellbeing in demanding environments. Additionally: -Young people's opportunities and obstacles, 2021 (SER) highlights systemic barriers faced by youth, including educational inequality, labour market inequities, mental health concerns, and climate anxiety. Youngsters from disadvantaged backgrounds face lower educational attainment and fewer employment opportunities, while mental health challenges such as burnout are increasingly prevalent. -European research also shows: youth workers themselves are at risk of burnout due to high workloads and lack of structured methods to support youth effectively. -The Youth Work in Europe Mission (Im)possible? symposium underscores that young people are among the biggest victims of crises and there is a pressing need to improve quality & accessibility in youth work, particularly for those with fewer opportunities. PC&G tackles these challenges by introducing a structured, practical and methodological approach to coaching, guiding and mentoring. We will train youth workers to recognise, analyse and strengthen both their personal and organisational methods and to adopt practices that can be applied directly in their daily work. Especially on how to carry out immediate and practical interventions with young people who cannot engage in abstract conversations or traditional educational methods. Partner organisations will enrich the process by contributing their diverse youth work practices: from outdoor education and rural initiatives to arts-based and community-driven approaches, creating a space of mutual learning and exchange. This will equip youth workers with clear tools that make their work more focused and sustainable, reducing burnout, strengthening the capacity and quality of youth organisations, and providing more youngsters with access to non-formal learning. Case studies showcase the effectiveness: -Aspen Institute demonstrates that coaching can help young people break the cycle of poverty, highlighting the effectiveness of targeted mentoring and step-by-step guidance in improving life outcomes.https://shorturl.at/Rw6LK -MCR Pathways (Scotland): A volunteer mentoring scheme that supports disadvantaged pupils in Glasgow. Despite facing funding challenges, the program has shown remarkable success, helping nearly 90% of mentored students proceed to further education or employment, compared to 50% of non-mentored peers. https://shorturl.at/gwlyf The aims of PC&G are: • To introduce a new, structured approach on coaching, guiding & mentoring fewer opportunity youngsters. • To organise a 7 day long professional development activity • To train 33 youth workers on how to coach, guide & mentor fewer opportunity youngsters, benefitting 660 youngsters directly; • To let youth workers and youth organisations define their own coaching method and approach towards the inclusion of young people with fewer opportunities; • To improve the quality and capacity of 9 youth organisations in working with young people with fewer opportunities. • To apply the learned methods through mentoring youngsters (3 sessions per participant, 99 in total); • To share coaching, guiding and mentoring methods through Coaching Manual; • To disseminate and spread coaching, mentoring and its methodological approach through 9 local seminars; • To evaluate results through 33 questionnaires and Youthpasses.
