The aim of Green Connections: Healthy and Ecological Use of Social Media is to empower young people to develop a healthier, more conscious and sustainable relationship with social media and digital technologies, while reconnecting with the natural world, their emotional well-being and their communities. From the perspective of youth work practice, this project responds to a growing need to provide young people with safe, non-formal and youth-friendly learning spaces where they can reflect on their digital habits, strengthen emotional resilience and recognise how their online behaviour impacts both themselves and the planet. Youth work has the responsibility to prepare young people for challenges that traditional education does not yet address: mental health in the digital era, eco-responsibility of online practices, and the ability to transform personal awareness into collective community action. Problems we want to address through this project: Overuse of social media leading to anxiety, lack of focus, addiction, low self-esteem and emotional burnout among young people; Disconnection from the physical world, resulting in isolation, reduced creativity and distraction from meaningful offline experiences; Lack of awareness of the environmental footprint of digital behaviour – including energy use, data storage and e-waste; Absence of safe youth-led spaces to discuss mental health, online pressure and emotional balance; Limited education on sustainable lifestyles and digital well-being adapted to the realities of young people’s lives; Digital inequality and exclusion, with some young people lacking access to healthy digital education or offline opportunities; Fragmented intercultural dialogue, with few chances for youth to share experiences across borders on how digital and ecological challenges affect them. Objectives of our project: To raise awareness of the psychological and emotional impact of excessive social media use on well-being; To explore the environmental footprint of digital consumption and introduce simple, accessible eco-digital practices; To support participants in developing personal strategies for digital balance, linking online life with meaningful offline experiences; To provide space for peer learning and intercultural exchange, where youth can share cultural and personal perspectives on digital use, ecology and inclusion; To offer outdoor, nature-connected activities that contrast and enrich digital routines, re-establishing the value of real-world presence; To co-create youth-friendly digital content that promotes well-being, inclusion and ecological awareness across popular platforms (Instagram, TikTok, Facebook); To develop a Green Connections Toolkit – a youth-led publication capturing methods, reflections and creative outputs to be used beyond the project; To build a long-term supportive network of young changemakers committed to conscious digital living and environmental action; To support the development of Youthpass competences (learning to learn, sense of initiative, social and civic competences, cultural awareness) and strengthen awareness of European values and active citizenship. During the project, participants will: Take part in interactive workshops exploring digital habits, emotional self-care and ecological awareness – not only as learners but also as facilitators of youth-led activities; Reflect daily on their learning through creative methods (drawing, journaling, Padlet diaries, storytelling, peer exchange); Engage in outdoor group activities that strengthen mindfulness, trust, teamwork and offline presence; Practice digital minimalism and experiment with “low-data living,” learning practical alternatives to constant connectivity; Co-create the Green Connections Toolkit, a tangible result to be used by youth workers, peers and local communities; Produce a personal photo-story about “offline spaces” in their hometowns, connecting their learning with local realities; Learn how to act as local ambassadors for sustainable digital life by designing and carrying out dissemination activities; Build friendships across cultures, gain confidence in speaking, presenting and leading, and deepen their sense of inclusion, empathy and shared responsibility. By combining youth-led learning, emotional development and connection with nature, Green Connections aims to inspire long-lasting behaviour change and create a model for youth work that is both digital and ecological. Participants will not only change their personal habits but also gain the competences to influence their peers and communities. For partner organisations, the project will strengthen capacity in addressing emerging youth needs and enrich their toolkit of non-formal education methods. Ultimately, this project seeks to bridge the gap between digital literacy, emotional well-being and ecological responsibility, showing that conscious choices both online and offline – can shape healthier individuals, communities.
