Objectives

The project Europe on TikTok: Youth Connecting Cultures Through New Media was born out of the conviction that young people are key actors in shaping the future of Europe, while at the same time being a group that needs tools for conscious participation in social, civic, and digital life. Through our daily work with young people, we see that social media – and especially TikTok – has become their natural environment of communication. However, in most cases, this platform is used primarily for entertainment. Our aim is to show that TikTok can also become an educational space, supporting the promotion of European values and the development of intercultural dialogue. We want young people to understand that values such as equality, solidarity, democracy, human rights, respect for dignity and individual freedom are not abstract slogans, but the foundations of the European community – principles that can and should be communicated in an attractive way, including through short video formats. For this reason, the project is designed to include workshops where participants not only learn technical digital skills but also develop reflective approaches to media content and conscious strategies for using social platforms in practice. The objectives of the project, from the perspective of working with young people, include: Strengthening European identity and awareness – participants will have the opportunity to reflect on the values underlying the European Union and explore how they can actively promote them in daily life. Through practical exercises, they will discover that they are not just consumers of media content but also creators who can influence the attitudes of their peers. Promoting intercultural dialogue – workshops and joint online activities will provide opportunities for exchange between young people from diverse backgrounds and cultures. This is not only about learning tolerance and openness, but also about gaining hands-on experience in building bridges of understanding and cooperation across differences. Developing digital and media literacy – participants will learn how to create engaging content on TikTok, how to use storytelling effectively, how to counter misinformation, and how to use media responsibly. They will acquire key 21st-century skills such as creativity, critical thinking, communication, and teamwork. Fostering civic engagement – the project highlights that young people are not just passive recipients of European policies or programs, but active co-creators. By taking part in the project, they will feel that they have a voice and a real impact on shaping their local and European communities. An important element of the project is the #EuropeOnTikTok hashtag, which will serve both as a unifying label and as a digital space where the content created by participants will be shared. This will create a repository of inspiration for other young people, who will encounter European values in a setting that is natural and appealing to them – the social media space. In our work with youth, we observe that they often have tremendous energy and creative potential, but lack the tools to express their ideas in ways that resonate with their peers. This project responds directly to that need by combining youth creativity with civic and European education. Through this approach, young people will learn that they can act as ambassadors of European values, and that their online activities can have a tangible impact in the offline world. In conclusion, we want to implement this project because we believe that young people – equipped with knowledge, digital skills, and value-based awareness – can become a genuine driving force of social change. Our goal is to demonstrate that TikTok does not have to be only a tool for entertainment: it can also become a platform for shaping pro-European attitudes, building community, and promoting the very essence of Europe – unity in diversity.
