Objectives

The Farm not Harm project aims to break down stereotypes about agriculture for young people, as well as to popularize agricultural careers for young people. Participants will better understand what a farm is, how to grow food organically, who can work in this field, and what can be achieved in this career. A major problem today is the migration of young people from their villages of birth to big cities in search of a better life. Their decision is supported by myths about the countryside, unprestigious professions in the countryside (such as farmer, clerk, gardener), and the unimportance of such professions in a digitalized world. Main objectives of the “Farm not Harm” are to build respect for rural professions through observation, provide participants with the knowledge about modern agriculture methods without any myths, teach participants how to grow their own food in the time of crisis and how to stay sustainable. Main problems: According to ILO, by 2021 only 30.5% of young people worked in agriculture, while 45.9% worked in services. Every year the percentage decreases. Eurostat projects that by 2051, 84.5% of rural EU regions loste population - averaging a 3.3‰ annual decline - driven by youth migration to cities, which accelerates rural depopulation and ageing. In many European countries, for example - Lithuania, the agriculture sector faced a labor shortage of 27.3% in 2021, attributed to youth unwillingness to work in agriculture and migration to urban areas (PMC). What we want to achieve: Educate young people that a career in agriculture is an important and necessary profession in which you can achieve success. Talk about development opportunities in rural areas so that young people strive to stay in small towns/villages and develop them. Through non-formal learning related to the topic of the project we expect to encourage the youth to care more about the environment, gain sustainable habits and keep it as a lifestyle. Moreover, through intercultural learning we will engage young people in future youth collaboration so that more people will find out about opportunities that Erasmus+ gives. Encourage young people to develop in farming, try their hand at volunteering, and teach them how to grow their own food.
