Objectives

The project “Artivism: Create to Resist” arises from the need to strengthen youth work practice by introducing innovative methods based on art and social activism. In the field of youth work, it is increasingly observed that traditional forms of non-formal education are no longer sufficient to engage young people who live in a world saturated with images, rapid digital communication, and ongoing social crises. Young people are seeking forms of expression that allow them not only to acquire knowledge but also to manifest their own voices, build a sense of agency, and meaningfully influence the surrounding reality. The main objective of the project is therefore to introduce methods of artivism – the combination of art and activism – into youth work practice. These methods allow for the creative processing of experiences and social challenges. From the perspective of everyday work with young people, this means tools that are more engaging, attractive, and closer to their sensitivity, while at the same time oriented toward European values such as equality, solidarity, human rights, and democracy. Youth work today requires tools that enable practitioners to overcome linguistic, social, and cultural barriers. Art serves as a universal language, accessible even to those who struggle with traditional verbal communication. Methods such as forum theatre, muralism, social photography, or storytelling enable young people to express themselves, share their stories, and collectively search for solutions to social issues. The project also addresses the problem of declining youth participation in traditional forms of civic engagement. According to Eurobarometer (2022), although young Europeans declare a strong attachment to democratic values, they are less likely than previous generations to engage in formal structures such as political parties or youth organizations. Artivism offers them alternative, more flexible, and creative forms of participation that better match their needs and modes of action. From the perspective of youth work practice, the key objectives of the project are: - to enrich the toolbox of youth workers with new, attractive, and tested methods that allow for more effective engagement of young people, - to strengthen young people’s social and civic competences through creative artistic activities that foster critical thinking, cooperation, and the ability to express opinions, - to promote inclusion by creating spaces in which marginalized youth can find their voice and sense of agency, - to develop intercultural competences through working in an international environment and using the universal language of art, - to create opportunities for reflection on European values and their practical application in the lives of young people. It is important to highlight that the project aligns with the recommendations of the European Youth Strategy 2019–2027, which emphasizes the need to support youth participation in civic life and the development of new, creative forms of engagement. Artivism, as a youth work method, enables the realization of these objectives in an attractive, engaging, and contemporary way that responds directly to the challenges faced by today’s youth.
