The Embodied Unity project is grounded on the observation that young people are losing connections to offline communities and are experiencing an ever-growing amount of stress and anxiety. The decline in emotional intelligence has brought about an increased difficulty to deal with these issues, especially for the youth coming from difficult backgrounds and facing economical difficulties. Our project has the aim to spread awareness and practice implementing body-based and mindfulness tools to provide accessible, replicable and empowering methods for young people to understand their emotions, regulate themselves and co-regulate with others, strengthening interpersonal connections. We believe youth workers play a pivotal role in fostering emotionally resilient communities, yet they also often face emotional distress themselves, which affects their ability to support the youth they work with. We aim to address this by offering practical tools rooted in body-based practices like mindfulness, embodiment and somatics. These methods empower youth workers to cultivate emotional balance, develop strong interpersonal relationships and foster meaningful offline communities, countering the growing trends of social isolation and digital disconnection. Together with our international network of youth NGOs, we’ve witnessed a troubling increase in mental health issues among young people, including anxiety and emotional instability, all enhanced by a lack of meaningful human connection and physical touch. Body-based practices, such as mindfulness and somatic exercises, offer a pathway to reclaim emotional well-being and foster deep community bonds. This project creates space for youth workers to experience these tools firsthand, helping them co-create solutions that bring emotional self-regulation into their youth work practices and local communities. By focusing on body-based and mindfulness techniques, Embodied Unity seeks to give youth workers a platform to explore new, research-backed methods to help youth regain emotional balance and interpersonal skills. The project will provide youth workers with tools they can use to foster deeper connections in their communities, helping them form supportive environments that enable youth to feel emotionally stable and connected in an increasingly digital world. Objectives During the 10 months of the Embodied Unity project, 24 youth workers from 8 partner countries (Poland, Italy, Hungary, Greece, France, Spain, Slovenia, Cyprus) will: - Gain knowledge of embodiment, mindfulness, and somatic practices, equipping them to guide youth in cultivating emotional awareness, balance and empathy. This knowledge will help youth workers support young people in navigating emotional challenges and building stronger interpersonal connections. - Develop skills to facilitate body-based practices that promote emotional self-regulation, enabling youth to manage stress and improve emotional stability. Youth workers will integrate these techniques into their daily youth work, helping young people express emotions more effectively and foster healthier relationships. - Foster attitudes of social connection and community support, encouraging youth workers to create offline communities that provide safe and supportive environments. This will lead to increased emotional resilience, a sense of belonging and the creation of local networks that enhance collective well-being. The project also aligns with the urgent need for youth workers to expand their toolkit of non-formal education methods. By empowering youth workers with these alternative approaches, we ensure that they are better equipped to foster emotional resilience in young people and help them navigate the modern pressures that often isolate and disconnect them from their communities. The dissemination of these methods, through follow-up activities and creation of the Embodied Unity Toolbox, will benefit networks of youth workers among Europe. It will create a ripple effect, ultimately benefiting a wider range of youth and reinforcing the sustainability of emotionally supportive communities in the partner countries and beyond.
