Objectives

Pianos and Strings Beyond Borders is a project between Uppsala kulturskola in Uppsala, Sweden and Leo Kestenberg Musikschule in Berlin, Germany, for young people, over and above their formal schooling. We plan to carry out this project to allow the young people in our organisations to have the opportunity to make an exchange that would not be possible otherwise. There is currently no opportunity for international exchanges within the framework of the non-formal music activities that we conduct. Our basic aim is to bind social and cultural ties between Swedish and German young people, regardless of background or circumstances. We intend to create a forum where young people can discuss conditions and limitations in their music making, but also discuss broader issues such as cultural and existential topics. Through this project, they will be given the opportunity to meet both physically and digitally in ways that will contribute to the overall development of all of our young people. We intend to give the young people the tools for this, but also let them create their own tools to be able to implement this project on their own terms. The following points are what have been used to identify and form the goals of this project: 1. Musical and artistic development 2. Social and cultural exchange 3. Build lifelong learning Uppsala Kulturskola and Leo Kestenberg Musikschule have an inclusive mindset where all social groups are welcome. This project will create conditions where young people from all backgrounds and situations will be able to participate on the same terms, and be given opportunities involving: 1. Empowering young people to shape their own lives, support their own personal development and independence, build their resilience and equip them with life skills to cope in a changing world. 2. Encouraging young people and give them the necessary resources to become active citizens working for solidarity and positive change, inspired by EU values and a European identity. 3. Improving policy decisions regarding their impact on young people in all sectors, especially employment, education, health and social inclusion. 4. A contribution to the eradication of youth poverty in all its forms and all forms of discrimination, by promoting the social inclusion of young people. Both organizations in this application have previous experience with Erasmus+ exchanges and have high ambitions that this exchange will continue to be a well-organized and successful, recurring collaboration. It is important for our young people and youth workers, but also important for developing ties between our organizations, across EU borders. Together, we want to implement this project to allow youth with different backgrounds to integrate and work together, based on their own abilities and conditions. This project intends to contain a high musical and artistic level, working with youths individually, in groups and in workshops to form a platform where the above points will be built upon. The previous experience that both partners have in both previous and ongoing Erasmus+ projects underlies our intention to continue working on building these networks together and keep moving forward in our work with youth in the European Union.
