“Technology, when used correctly, is humanity's most powerful environmental protection tool.” – Gro Harlem Brundtland One of the biggest global problems facing young people today is the environmental crisis. According to UNEP (2023) data, greenhouse gas emissions have increased by 12% in the last 10 years. The European Environment Agency (2022) states that 67% of young people believe that climate change directly threatens their lives. The OECD's 2022 "Youth and Environment" report reveals that young people are highly motivated to develop solutions, but their digital skills are inadequate. In Turkey, TÜİK (2023) announced a daily waste data of 1.3 kg per person, and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (2022) highlighted the inadequacy of environmental education among young people. Academic research (Mousavi & Thøgersen, 2021; Sachs et al., 2019) also emphasizes that artificial intelligence and digital technologies are critical tools for young people in sustainable development. Our Google survey, which included 126 young people from Turkey, Bulgaria, Hungary, North Macedonia, and Greece, also supported this need: 72% see environmental problems as a major threat. 58% stated that they want to find solutions but lack digital skills. 43% stated that they have no knowledge of artificial intelligence. 81% are motivated by the idea of using technology for the environment. Therefore, the starting point of our project is that young people, despite their environmental awareness, remain inadequate in artificial intelligence and digital technologies. Existing initiatives address these two areas separately, with few, if any, programs at the intersection. The EcoMind project aims to fill this gap. Young people will both gain environmental awareness and develop concrete solutions using artificial intelligence and digital tools. General Objective To empower young people to develop innovative solutions to environmental problems using artificial intelligence and digital technologies. Specific Objectives To ensure that participants acquire basic knowledge and practical competencies in artificial intelligence and digital skills. Designing innovative digital solutions to environmental problems. Young people from different countries collaborate cross-culturally to develop joint products. Strengthening critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity skills through informal learning methods.
