Although today’s youth have unlimited access to digital content, they often lack the ability to consume such content in a conscious and healthy way. Digital platforms, overflowing with fast-consumed, superficial, and emotionally charged content, may give a false sense of mental satisfaction, but they also weaken young people’s capacity for deep thinking, questioning, and critical analysis. This phenomenon is known as "digital obesity" and has become a growing threat to the cognitive development of young individuals. Our Erasmus+ project titled "Fighting Digital Obesity" is designed to help young people develop a more critical, conscious, and selective approach to digital content consumption. Using non-formal education methods, the project aims to equip 36 young participants over the course of eight days with essential skills in digital awareness, media literacy, and critical thinking. Additionally, through online campaigns, we aim to reach at least 500 young people to raise awareness about the concept of digital obesity and highlight the individual and societal impacts of unconscious digital consumption. From a youth work perspective, this project aims not only to enhance young people’s digital competencies, but also to empower them in areas such as: Digital content creation, Fact-checking and information verification, Digital hygiene, Online ethics and responsibility. Through workshops, interactive sessions, and creative digital production activities, the project will promote active participation and engagement. Special attention will be given to supporting participants from disadvantaged backgrounds in developing a healthier relationship with the digital world and becoming more resilient and aware digital citizens.
