Objectives

The ‘92–95 Legacy’ project is a comprehensive youth initiative that aims to instil historical awareness, a culture of peace, and empathy in young people, drawing on the heavy legacy of the Bosnian War between 1992 and 1995. By implementing this project, we aim not only to shed light on a specific historical period, but also to ensure that young people become individuals who embrace peace at a personal, social and international level. In keeping with the spirit of the Erasmus+ Youth Exchange Programmes, the project will offer a learning experience shaped by the active participation of young people, responding to their needs and potential. First and foremost, we want to create a strong awareness among young people of the concepts of war crimes, genocide and human rights. Through workshops, academic sessions and field visits, participants will learn how these concepts are defined in international law, analyse the historical context and discuss lessons to be learned from the past. In this way, they will develop not only their knowledge but also their critical thinking and questioning skills. Another important goal is to offer young people the opportunity to internalise a culture of peace. Focusing particularly on male students, we aim to transform their roles, which are often associated with violence and competition in society. Through this project, young men will experience that defending peace is also a sign of strength, and that empathy and solidarity are as important as physical strength. This approach offers an innovative contribution to gender roles in youth work. Another objective of the project is to increase young people's levels of empathy and contribute to the development of a shared memory. Field visits to Sarajevo, museum and memorial experiences will provide young people with direct witnessing opportunities. This experience will enable them not only to acquire academic knowledge but also to establish a human connection with the victims. Bringing together young people from different countries who have witnessed shared suffering in the same space will increase intercultural empathy and strengthen bonds of solidarity. Furthermore, participants will be actively involved in learning and production processes throughout the project. Through group work, role-playing, simulations, and peace forums, young people will not merely be passive learners but active designers of the process. This participatory approach will make learning more sustainable in terms of youth work and develop their self-confidence, communication, leadership, and collaboration skills. Another objective of the project is to increase young people's social participation and turn them into ambassadors of peace at local, national and European levels. The ‘Peace Manifesto of the 92–95 Legacy’ that will emerge at the end of the project will not only reflect the participants' vision but will also inspire them to initiate peace-focused initiatives in their communities. The manifesto will serve as a concrete tool to support young people in advocating for peace within their own communities and on international platforms. In addition to all these objectives, another aim of the project is to strengthen inter-institutional cooperation and establish international networks. The collaboration between organisations from Turkey, Belgium and Bosnia and Herzegovina will create lasting bonds between youth organisations and open the door to more comprehensive projects in the future. This is also directly in line with the Erasmus+ programme's objectives of sustainability and networking. Ultimately, by implementing the ‘92–95 Legacy’ project, we aim to enable young people to gain historical awareness, increase their empathy levels, internalise a culture of peace, develop active citizenship skills, and become agents of social peace. The ultimate goal of the project is to facilitate young people's contribution not only to their individual development but also to the peace vision of societies. Thus, this project will create lasting value as both an educational and social transformation process in terms of youth work.
