Objectives

DEMOS addresses a documented gap in European youth work: visual civic illiteracy. Eurobarometer 513 (2023) reveals 62% of youth aged 15–24 feel their voice "does not count" in democratic processes, while mos experience anxiety when confronted with war imagery on social media. Participants consume tragedy at TikTok speed without tools to process or respond meaningfully. DEMOS responds not with abstract debates (which privilege fluent English speakers) but with trauma sensitive visual methodologies that transform passive consumption into active democratic participation. Our core youth work objective: Equip 32 young people with visual civic literacy the capacity to translate democratic values (peace, solidarity, freedom of expression) into non-verbal messages that transcend linguistic barriers and trauma triggers. This aligns with SALTO's Quality Standard 2. Objective 1: Democratise Peace Education Through Language-Light Methodology Youth work innovation: Replace verbal-heavy dialogue (exclusionary for Roma youth, refugees, rural NEETs) with visual-first facilitation. Participants co-create Hybrid Posters using symbolism, colour psychology, and upcycled materials expressing complex emotions (trauma, hope) without English fluency. Ukrainian IDPs share war experiences through collage rather than forced verbal narration honouring SALTO's Inclusion Standard that "participation must not retraumatise." Measurable outcome: ≥80% pre/post increase in "I can express complex emotions about conflict without perfect English" (5-point Likert scale). Objective 2: Cultivate Critical Digital Literacy Youth work innovation: Move beyond "digital detox" moralising or uncritical tech celebration. During Design Labs (Days 5–6), participants engage ethically guided AI tools (Midjourney/Canva) while debating bias in war imagery representation e.g., "Why does Midjourney generate stereotyped 'refugee' images?" This develops DigComp 2.2 competence area 3.1 (Programming) at an awareness level: understanding AI as amplifier of human expression, not replacement. Measurable outcome: 100% produce ≥1 Hybrid Poster applying 3 ethical principles (AI as tool not author; human curation; QR transparency). Objective 3: Build Civic Self-Efficacy Through Embedded Public Action Youth work innovation: Avoid "one-night exhibition" spectacle that reinforces powerlessness ("Will anyone come?"). Instead, participants install posters in pre-secured community venues (schools, youth centres) where viewers already gather transforming democracy from event into infrastructure. Standing beside their artwork in Impact Hub's courtyard (Day 7 PM), participants practice Article 11 (EU Charter) freedom of expression with venue visitors who choose to engage building self-efficacy without street solicitation risks. Measurable outcome: ≥70% report increased confidence in initiating civic actions (3-month follow-up survey). Objective 4: Strengthen Transnational Solidarity Beyond "Pity" Youth work innovation: Counter "compassion fatigue" by positioning conflict-affected youth as co-authors of European narratives, not passive aid recipients. Mixed-nationality Design Squads (Ukrainian + Portuguese pair, Georgian + Spanish pair) jointly create posters e.g., "This blue stripe represents both Kharkiv skies and Mediterranean hope." This horizontal collaboration shifts perception from sympathy ("poor refugees") to solidarity ("we co-create peace"). Measurable outcome: ≥80% pre/post increase in "I see conflict-affected peers as equals in civic action" (Likert scale). Cross-Cutting Youth Work Principles Trauma sensitivity: All conflict-related activities (Days 3–4) include mandatory parallel "Peace Symbols Collage Station", participants exit without explanation. Green practice as pedagogy: 100% upcycled materials teach sustainability as creative opportunity not restriction directly leveraging our validated ECO-Literacy Guide (KA220 What A Wonderful World!). Realistic scope: No "prompt engineering mastery" claims (impossible in 2 days). Focus on critical awareness aligning with youth work ethics of honest competence framing. These objectives position DEMOS not as an art workshop, but as innovative youth work practice using visual methodologies to democratise civic participation for those systematically excluded from verbal-heavy democratic spaces. By centering trauma sensitivity, language justice, and embedded public action, we operationalise European Youth Goal #9 (Space and Participation for All) in ways traditional debate formats cannot achieve.
