The Green Future: Boosting Youth Work with GreenComp project aims to respond to one of the most pressing needs in today’s youth work sector: how to integrate environmental sustainability into non-formal education practices in a way that is both meaningful and action-oriented. Climate change, environmental degradation, and the need for sustainable lifestyles are issues that increasingly affect young people’s futures. However, many youth workers lack the competences, frameworks, and practical tools to address these themes systematically in their daily practice. This project seeks to bridge that gap by introducing and embedding the GreenComp framework, the European sustainability competence framework, into youth work methodologies. Our overall aim is to empower youth workers with the knowledge, skills, and methods needed to foster sustainability competences among young people, particularly those with fewer opportunities. By doing so, we want to ensure that youth work becomes a driving force for sustainable mindsets, behaviours, and practices at personal, community, and societal levels. The project’s objectives are: - To strengthen the competences of youth workers in integrating environmental sustainability into youth work practice, guided by GreenComp’s four competence areas: embodying sustainability values, embracing complexity, envisioning sustainable futures, and acting for sustainability. - To provide practical tools and methods for non-formal education activities that promote critical thinking, responsible choices, and proactive environmental engagement among young people. - To create a community of practice among participating organisations and youth workers, ensuring peer learning, exchange of good practices, and ongoing collaboration. - To raise awareness of the role of youth work in supporting the green transition, positioning youth organisations as key actors in fostering sustainable behaviours. - To produce accessible outputs, such as a GreenComp-based toolkit and practice guidelines, that can be used by youth workers beyond the partnership. From the perspective of youth work, the project is not only about “teaching sustainability” but about embedding it into the ethos of youth work itself: through reflective, participatory, and experiential learning that empowers young people to act for change. In this sense, the project strengthens the relevance of youth work in addressing global challenges and equips youth workers to inspire and support young people in shaping a greener future.
