Objectives

The Horizon Express project aims to support young people with fewer opportunities to take their first steps into European mobility in a safe, inclusive, and empowering way. The project focuses on students of Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz who face social, economic, cultural, or geographical barriers that often prevent them from participating in international travel and learning opportunities. From a youth work perspective, the main goal of the project is to help young people build confidence, independence, and a sense of belonging in Europe through real-life experience. By travelling together using DiscoverEU, participants learn how to plan journeys, manage everyday challenges, work as a group, and make decisions in unfamiliar environments. The project supports them in moving from feeling unsure or excluded to feeling capable and included. One of the key objectives is to strengthen practical autonomy. Through shared responsibilities during the journey, participants gain experience in navigating travel systems, managing simple budgets, and using digital tools. These skills are especially important for young people who have never travelled independently before and help them feel more confident about future mobility. Another objective is to promote inclusion and mutual understanding. The project brings together young people from different backgrounds, including students from rural areas and those with migrant backgrounds. By travelling and solving challenges together, participants learn to understand each other better, reduce stereotypes, and develop a stronger sense of European belonging. Environmental responsibility is also an important objective of the project. Participants experience sustainable travel in practice by using trains, public transport, and low-impact daily habits. This helps them understand that environmentally friendly travel is realistic, affordable, and accessible, even for young people with limited resources. Finally, the project aims to ensure that learning through experience is recognised and valued. Participants are supported in reflecting on what they have learned and in receiving a Youthpass certificate that helps them describe their skills and personal development. This recognition supports their future educational, professional, and civic engagement. The project is implemented using non-formal youth work methods, with a strong focus on participation, safety, and learning by doing. Youth workers and mentors support participants throughout the process, ensuring a safe environment while encouraging young people to take responsibility and make their own decisions. Through Horizon Express, young people with fewer opportunities are given the chance not only to travel across Europe, but also to grow in confidence, skills, and awareness, helping them take an active role in their own future and in European society.
