Objectives

The project “À table sans frontières” aims to use participatory cooking as a concrete and innovative youth work tool to promote social inclusion, intercultural dialogue and active youth participation. By bringing together young people from Belgium, France, Georgia and Armenia through two youth exchanges, the project creates non-formal learning spaces where young people can meet, cooperate and learn from one another through shared, hands-on experiences. The main objective of the project is to strengthen social bonds and mutual understanding between young people from different cultural and social backgrounds, using shared meals as a universal language. From a youth work perspective, cooking and eating together make it easier to overcome language barriers, social inequalities and educational differences. This approach allows young people to contribute in practical ways, to take responsibility and to feel valued, regardless of their background or previous opportunities. The project strongly builds on the experience of KOM à la maison, the coordinating organisation based in Brussels, which has long-standing expertise in tackling social isolation through participatory and community-based cooking. KOM à la maison operates a neighbourhood solidarity restaurant where residents, volunteers and people from diverse backgrounds cook and share meals together in a spirit of openness, sustainability and accessibility. This local youth-centred practice, developed in a multicultural urban context, forms the pedagogical foundation of the project. “À table sans frontières” seeks to transfer and adapt this proven youth work approach to an international level, using youth mobility as a way to strengthen intercultural learning and solidarity. From the perspective of youth work practice, the project pursues several concrete objectives. It aims to develop social and intercultural competences among participants, such as teamwork, intercultural communication, self-confidence and the ability to cooperate in diverse groups. It also seeks to raise awareness about sustainable food practices, through a fully vegetarian approach and the integration of anti-waste and environmentally responsible habits into everyday activities. In addition, the project encourages young people to become active contributors to their communities, by exposing them to inspiring local initiatives like KOM à la maison in Belgium and community-based youth actions in Armenia. Through non-formal education methods, strong youth participation and close interaction with local communities, “À table sans frontières” aims to offer a meaningful, high-quality youth exchange experience with lasting impact. The project goes beyond the exchange itself by strengthening the capacities of youth organisations, sharing transferable practices and motivating young people to stay engaged after the project ends. In this way, it fully contributes to the objectives of the Erasmus+ Youth programme and promotes a youth work approach that is inclusive, practical and transformative.
