Collective leadership (later CL) is central to Open Youth Work. Young people themselves determine the direction of their organization and undertake all kinds of initiatives for and by young people. However, the context is changing and so are the forms of youth engagement in open youth work. Open Youth Work is also a place where young people meet to have fun and let go of the obligations of everyday life for a while. During this exchange adventure, we will explore together how collective leadership in Open Youth Work can make freedom and fun flourish. With this project, we aim to tackle the challenges related to leadership models that no longer fit current needs and trends of youth participation by exploring, understanding, exchanging and inspiring collective leadership models across Flemish and Bulgarian youth organizations. More specifically, the project aims to inspire youth workers with the concept of collective leadership and equip them with tools and knowledge to navigate in a context of changing youth engagement. The project will also create space for exchange and networking between Flemish and Bulgarian youth organizations to foster intercultural learning and cooperation. The project will be implemented in four stages. Stage 1: Reflection We trigger reflection on recognizing CL in there own practice via peer review. Additionally we will identify and reflect on inspiring case studies from innovative open youth work practices and other related sectors such as citizen led projects, social artistic projects and other grassroots initiatives. Stage 2: Explore After the reflection stage we zoom out and go from organisational level to societal context. We explore dynamics of changing youth engagement in both Flemish and Bulgarian context based on existing research. Stage 3: Space for CL in organization structure + network of partners After the reflection and exploration stage, the participants are ready to brainstorm on concrete adjustments to their organization structure to create optimal space for CL and to be resilient in a changing context. We will address the internal structure but also the network of stakeholders around the organization. By building international connections the exchange will be a start to strengthen this network. Stage 4: Empower young people In the last stage the participants make an action plan to encourage and empower young people to gradually take on leadership themselves. Via the action plan they implement and experiment with the concept of collective leadership in concrete interactions with young people.
