Objectives

With Code for Inclusion, we want to respond to a very concrete and urgent challenge observed in all partner countries: many young people with fewer opportunities are growing up in a digital society, yet remain excluded from its benefits due to low confidence, limited access to beginner-friendly learning, and negative experiences with formal education. From a youth work perspective, this exclusion is not primarily a lack of talent or motivation, but a lack of accessible, supportive, and realistic learning environments where young people can experience success, belonging, and personal growth. The main aim of the project is to empower young people with fewer opportunities to engage confidently with digital tools and basic coding concepts through non-formal education, while strengthening their sense of self-efficacy, participation, and social inclusion. The project does not aim to create technical experts, but to help young people understand that digital skills are learnable, relevant to their lives, and within their reach. From the perspective of youth work practice, the project pursues the following objectives: • To provide entry-level, accessible digital learning for young people with fewer opportunities, using non-formal, practical, and step-by-step methods adapted to different learning speeds and confidence levels. • To build digital confidence and motivation to learn, especially among young people who associate technology with failure or exclusion, by creating a safe learning environment based on peer support and experiential learning. • To reduce digital and social exclusion by ensuring full participation of disadvantaged youth through tailored preparation, ongoing support, and inclusive group dynamics during the exchange. • To strengthen transversal competences such as problem-solving, teamwork, communication, critical thinking, and initiative, using digital tools as a means for cooperation and personal development rather than as an end in themselves. • To foster intercultural learning and social inclusion by bringing together young people from diverse backgrounds in mixed international teams where all participants contribute on an equal footing. • To support active participation and local transfer, enabling participants to share their learning through small, realistic follow-up actions in their communities after the exchange. In youth work terms, Code for Inclusion aims to shift participants’ self-perception: from passive users of technology to confident learners who feel capable of understanding, questioning, and using digital tools in ways that support their future education, employability, and civic participation. At the same time, the project strengthens partner organisations’ capacity to work inclusively with disadvantaged youth, using digital topics in a way that is realistic, human-centred, and grounded in non-formal education values. Through this approach, the project contributes to inclusion, participation, and empowerment — not by lowering expectations, but by meeting young people where they are and supporting them to move forward step by step.
