With “AI Unlocked”, we aim to respond to a growing gap observed in youth work practice: while artificial intelligence is rapidly shaping education, employment, and participation in society, many young people—especially those with fewer opportunities—remain excluded from understanding how AI works, how it affects their daily lives, and how they can engage with it critically and responsibly. This lack of access increases digital inequalities and limits young people’s ability to participate confidently in an increasingly data-driven and algorithmic society. From the perspective of youth work practice, the project aims to empower young people through non-formal education by providing them with accessible, entry-level competences related to artificial intelligence, digital literacy, and critical thinking. The project is designed as an inclusive learning process that combines practical experimentation, reflection, peer learning, and intercultural exchange, rather than technical or academic instruction. The main objectives of the project are to: - strengthen young people’s understanding of basic AI concepts and everyday applications, enabling them to move from passive users of technology to informed and critical participants; - develop critical thinking skills related to online information, algorithmic influence, and ethical use of AI, supporting young people in making conscious digital choices; - increase digital confidence and self-efficacy among participants with fewer opportunities, who often lack access to structured digital learning environments; - equip participants with simple, transferable tools and methods that they can use in their local communities to raise awareness about AI and responsible digital behaviour among peers; - foster active youth participation, intercultural dialogue, and democratic engagement by encouraging young people to reflect on the social impact of AI and their role as responsible digital citizens. Through a structured youth exchange based on non-formal learning methods, “AI Unlocked” supports personal development, social inclusion, and active citizenship. The project contributes to professional youth work practice by demonstrating how complex digital topics can be approached in an inclusive, youth-friendly, and practical way, ensuring that young people—regardless of background—are better prepared to navigate and shape the digital realities of their future.
