Objectives

By implementing CleverUp!, we aim to strengthen the quality, resilience and democratic consistency of our youth work practice in a context marked by increasing social tensions, polarisation, stress and vulnerability among young people. In recent years, we have been working actively with vulnerable youth, including young people from marginalised communities, socially disadvantaged backgrounds and environments affected by discrimination or limited opportunities. In these contexts, youth workers face complex challenges: mistrust in institutions, low civic engagement, communication barriers, group conflicts and emotional stress. We increasingly observe that young people need safe spaces for dialogue, structured participation and supportive facilitation. At the same time, youth workers themselves require stronger competences to manage these dynamics professionally and ethically. From a youth work practice perspective, our primary objective is to improve the capacity of our youth workers to create inclusive, democratic and well-structured learning environments. We want them to move beyond informal enthusiasm and develop advanced skills in participatory facilitation, conflict transformation and collaborative leadership. This includes the ability to moderate sensitive discussions, manage group tensions constructively, prevent escalation and support young people in expressing diverse viewpoints respectfully. A second key objective is to strengthen democratic participation within youth activities. We want to ensure that young people are not only participants but active contributors in planning, decision-making and evaluation processes. By equipping our youth workers with structured governance tools—such as consent-based decision-making, transparent delegation systems and inclusive meeting formats—we aim to embed democratic practice into daily youth work. In societies where polarisation and mistrust are growing, modelling democratic behaviour at local level becomes a powerful educational tool. Another objective is to enhance communication and negotiation skills. Youth workers often act as mediators between young people, families, institutions and community stakeholders. Strengthening their competences in negotiation, active listening and constructive dialogue will allow them to build bridges between different social groups and reduce misunderstandings. We also aim to improve organisational resilience. Working with vulnerable groups can be emotionally demanding. Without clear structures and shared responsibility, youth workers risk burnout. By introducing structured teamwork models, clear role distribution and collective reflection practices, we want to create a healthier and more sustainable working environment for our team. Ultimately, our broader objective is to raise the professional standard of our youth work. Through this project, we want to ensure that our activities are not only well-intentioned but methodologically strong, democratically grounded and socially responsive. By strengthening the competences of youth workers in facilitation, conflict resolution, participatory governance and volunteer engagement, we contribute to more stable, inclusive and empowering spaces for young people. In a time when many young people feel unheard or overwhelmed, our goal is to equip youth workers with the tools to foster dialogue, trust and active citizenship. CleverUp! is therefore not only about training; it is about reinforcing youth work as a democratic practice capable of responding to social tensions and supporting vulnerable youth with professionalism, empathy and structure.
