Objectives

Through this project, we aim to provide young people with fewer opportunities from the rural municipality of Tran – especially students and recent school leavers from Secondary School “Geo Milev” and the surrounding villages – with an inclusive, structured and empowering DiscoverEU travel experience. By implementing this project, we want to break the cycle of poverty, isolation and early school leaving by offering these young people their first meaningful contact with Europe, while strengthening their key competences and motivation to stay in education and participate actively in their community. The primary objectives of the project are: 1. Inclusivity and accessibility – to ensure that young people facing economic hardship, geographical isolation, discrimination and early school leaving can participate in DiscoverEU on equal terms with their peers, thanks to the close cooperation with the municipality of Tran and Secondary School “Geo Milev”. 2. Personal and social development – to empower participants by increasing their self-confidence, autonomy, resilience and teamwork skills, helping them see themselves as capable and valuable young people with a future beyond the limits of their town. 3. Intercultural competence – to encourage participants to engage with different cultures, question stereotypes (including those about Roma communities), and develop empathy, tolerance and openness. 4. Learning and education orientation – to link the travel experience clearly with school and future pathways, showing that completing secondary education opens doors to further Erasmus+ opportunities, training and employment. 5. Sustainability and responsible travel – to promote environmentally friendly choices such as green travel, reduced waste and respect for public spaces, and to connect these practices with everyday life in their rural environment. 6. Digital literacy – to strengthen the ability of participants to use digital tools for planning routes, navigating, communicating and documenting their experience in a safe and responsible way. 7. Active citizenship – to inspire young people to become more engaged in their school and municipality, express their views and take initiative in local youth activities. From the perspective of youth work practice, the project uses non-formal education as its main approach. Preparation, travel and follow-up are organised through interactive workshops, mentoring, peer learning, daily reflection circles and simple self-assessment tools adapted to the reality of rural and Roma youth. Participants are involved in planning their journey, choosing activities, setting personal learning goals and later sharing their stories in school and community events. Youth workers, teachers, school mediators and municipal staff cooperate as one team around each young person, creating a safe and supportive environment in which they can experiment, make mistakes and grow. By achieving these objectives, we aim not only to offer a one-time trip, but to create a coherent youth work process that supports long-term personal development, re-engagement with education and stronger participation of young people with fewer opportunities in Tran.
