The main objective of the project is to build on the successful implementation of previous projects and further develop a long-term concept for supporting and developing young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. The key aim is to inspire students with limited opportunities and show them that their socioeconomic background or other segregational factors—cultural, geographical, or gender-based—need not be an insurmountable obstacle. The project aims to create a level playing field so that young people from disadvantaged backgrounds can have similar opportunities to their peers who grow up in a normally stimulating socioeconomic environment. Long-term surveys and assessments, such as PISA (2018, 2023), repeatedly point to the fact that the Czech Republic has long lagged behind in terms of equal access to education. Children from disadvantaged backgrounds often face a predetermined life path that is significantly influenced by the socioeconomic factors they were born into, and only in exceptional cases do they manage to break out of these conditions. Inequalities are not only evident in formal education, but also very significantly in informal education, which is often perceived as the domain of family background and subsequently available financial resources. Our organization has long promoted the principle of equality and systematically strives to ensure fair conditions for all students. However, in the field of informal education, we had encountered limitations in the past that could not be overcome without external support. Thanks to the DiscoverEU project, we have managed to effectively reduce these barriers, and its successful implementation has brought measurable results – not only in terms of student engagement, but also in increasing the attractiveness of the organization as an institution that can specifically reduce educational inequalities compared to similar organizations. The follow-up project aims to further reinforce these results. The main objective is to further reduce inequalities in access to non-formal education for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, while maintaining and developing an environment in which educational opportunities are gradually becoming more accessible. The organization wants to enable participants to acquire practical skills and competences that will have a direct impact not only on their abilities in the field of non-formal education, but will also positively reflect in their results in formal education. As in the previous project period, the goal is to ensure that the newly acquired skills become a natural part of their everyday lives. Another important goal of the project is to maintain the participants' long-term interest in education and learning in its various forms, both formal and informal. Participants will continue to be motivated to step outside their comfort zone, thereby gaining not only new experiences, but also the ability to better overcome cultural barriers, develop openness, and reevaluate ingrained stereotypes. The project will be implemented in accordance with the objectives, priorities, and quality standards of the Erasmus+ program so as to ensure maximum effectiveness, quality of outputs, and sustainability of the changes achieved. If we could perceive the first projects as an initiative aimed to trigger a change in the field of informal education, then the follow-up project primarily seeks to establish a long-term system and its stable sustainability. We realize that the work on overcoming barriers does not end with one successful project, and at the same time, we recognize that with access to additional financial resources, we could achieve an even greater impact—not only for students, but also for our wider community. From the perspective of the Czech National Agency for Erasmus+, our organization has also proven to be a reliable and competent partner that is not only able to successfully implement projects, but also to respond flexibly to unexpected situations. In practice, for example, we managed to overcome complications related to administrative delays. Specifically, after receiving the approval letter, we are able to pre-finance the project from our own resources, so that its implementation does not get jeopardized.
