Objectives

The project entitled "The Journey is the Destination" aims to involve four groups of disadvantaged students from our school in four different trips around Europe with the aim of broadening their horizons, gaining self-confidence, and focusing their interest on a world in which it is possible to overcome many of the limitations that currently affect and trouble young people through active learning. Students choose one of four different themes: historical, pilgrim's journey, journey to ancient monuments, or a journey inspired by J.W. Goethe. With the help of more experienced peers and accompanying teachers, the students plan and prepare these four journeys themselves, including booking accommodation, insurance, train tickets, and museum tickets. Throughout the process of preparation, implementation, evaluation, and dissemination, they will be active initiators of all activities related to the trips. The project aims to help students become more aware of their disadvantages and learn to work with them. Students will be forced to leave their comfort zone on a journey to discover places that are related to their interests. They will overcome the discomfort associated with the unknown and rely on the help of others in the team. They will develop new certainties that are not tied to their home. During this project, our school will apply an approach that promotes inclusion and will ensure its accessibility to students who are disadvantaged in terms of health, social status, economic status, geography, and culture. Thanks to our previous very positive experience, our school is applying for this project for the second time, as the first run was very well received by students, teachers, parents, and the general public. We will once again be able to send groups of disadvantaged students out into the world to gain experience, and we can support them personally, humanely, and professionally on their hitherto difficult life journey. It will not be so important where the journey takes us, but what we learn along the way.
