Objectives

The "Nature as a Gym" project aims to empower young people by providing them with accessible, low-cost opportunities to improve their physical and mental well-being while fostering environmental awareness and cross-cultural collaboration. From a youth work perspective, the project focuses on promoting inclusion, active participation, and personal development in settings that are outside traditional educational or recreational structures. The main objectives of the project are as follows. First, the project seeks to democratize access to fitness and health. Many young people face economic or geographical barriers that prevent them from accessing gyms or structured sports activities. Through the project, participants will learn that nature itself can serve as a free and accessible gym. They will develop skills to use urban and natural spaces for physical exercise, gain creativity in designing their own outdoor activities, and build confidence in promoting these practices within their communities. Second, the project aims to enhance mental resilience and well-being. It addresses the growing mental health challenges among youth, including stress, burnout, and eco-anxiety. Through non-formal learning activities such as mindfulness exercises, reflective journaling, and guided nature movement, participants will acquire tools to manage stress, strengthen self-confidence, and develop a positive relationship with their bodies and the environment. Third, the project intends to foster environmental awareness and responsibility. Participants will practice sustainable outdoor activities and learn principles such as Leave No Trace and Allemannsretten. They will develop a sense of environmental stewardship, gain knowledge about the fragility of local ecosystems, and understand how individual actions can contribute to the protection of natural spaces. Fourth, the project aims to promote cross-cultural learning and cooperation. By bringing together young people from six countries, the project will create opportunities for intercultural dialogue, teamwork, and the development of social and communication skills. Participants will collaborate in designing and implementing activities such as the Eco-Olympics, share their own cultural practices, and learn to work effectively in diverse groups. Fifth, the project seeks to develop youth as multipliers and leaders. Beyond personal growth, participants will become active peer educators and local ambassadors. They will acquire skills in facilitating outdoor activities, creating digital content, and disseminating knowledge, allowing them to share their experiences with peers in their communities. This multiplier effect ensures that the project’s impact continues long after the mobility itself.
