Objectives

The youth exchange project, “United in Our Differences,” is designed to bring young people from across Europe and neighboring regions together to explore the challenges faced by immigrants and refugees, understand the underlying reasons for migration, and collaboratively develop practical solutions to support integration. The project seeks to raise awareness of these issues within a friendly and inclusive environment, while also empowering participants to share this awareness with their wider communities. Migration has become an increasingly pressing issue in recent years, particularly following the outbreak of the Syrian Civil War and the Russian aggression against Ukraine. The rapid increase in refugee and migrant populations has created significant challenges both for displaced individuals striving to adapt to new environments and for local communities, who often struggle with prejudice, misinformation, and fear. The youth exchange project “United in Our Differences” aims to bring young people together to better understand migration and refugee-related issues, explore the reasons behind forced migration, and collectively develop inclusive and realistic solutions. In recent years, migration has become one of the most significant social challenges in Europe and neighboring regions, particularly following the outbreak of the Syrian civil war and the Russian aggression against Ukraine. As a result, the number of refugees and migrants has increased rapidly, creating challenges both for displaced people trying to adapt to new societies and for local communities struggling with fear, misinformation, and prejudice. In addition, ongoing political instability and restrictive governance in certain countries, including the potential for increased migration flows from Iran due to its authoritarian regime and limitations on fundamental freedoms, may further contribute to regional displacement dynamics. These evolving migration patterns highlight the importance of equipping young people with accurate knowledge, critical thinking skills, and intercultural competences to promote social cohesion and inclusive communities. Refugees and migrants often face serious difficulties related to social inclusion, access to education and employment, discrimination, and lack of understanding from host communities. At the same time, local populations may develop negative perceptions due to insufficient information, political narratives, or lack of direct contact with migrants. This project seeks to address both sides of the issue by fostering dialogue, empathy, and mutual understanding in a safe and friendly international environment. Our main objective is to contribute to the integration of refugees and migrants into local societies while positively transforming the attitudes of young people toward migration and diversity. The participating countries, Germany, Türkiye, Latvia, Belgium, N. Macedonia, and Hungary, have each faced migration-related issues and implemented varying solutions, offering a rich context for sharing experiences, best practices, and lessons learned. The project focuses on raising awareness of the social, cultural, and economic challenges faced by immigrants and refugees, while exploring practical methods to support integration and social cohesion. In line with the principles reflected in the project’s name, “United in Our Differences,” the exchange is grounded in European values of solidarity, diversity, and inclusion. It aims to foster understanding and empathy among young people, emphasizing that societal well-being and cohesion are strengthened when communities work together. Through interactive workshops, discussions, study visits, and collaborative activities, participants will deepen their understanding of key concepts such as refugees, migrants, and asylum seekers, as well as the processes and challenges of integration. They will critically examine the reasons behind migration and reflect on the obstacles that displaced individuals encounter, while also developing solutions and strategies to facilitate inclusion. The project encourages participants to generate ideas for practical integration initiatives and to share these with peers and communities in their home countries. Ultimately, “United in Our Differences” seeks to empower young people to become active advocates for refugee rights, intercultural understanding, and social cohesion, fostering a generation of informed, empathetic, and engaged European citizens who recognize that unity in diversity strengthens societies. This approach ensures that the project goes beyond raising awareness, providing participants with tangible skills, knowledge, and perspectives that can influence both local and international contexts, while promoting dialogue, intercultural exchange, and shared responsibility in addressing one of the most significant humanitarian challenges of our time.
