CONNECT - Creating Open Networks & New Experiences through Cultural Training is a youth worker mobility project developed in response to urgent changes in today's social reality. Youth work across Europe is increasingly carried out in culturally diverse contexts, while societies are also facing stronger polarisation, misinformation, and rising hate speech (especially online). At the same time, discrimination remains widespread: EU surveys show that many citizens perceive discrimination as common on the basis of ethnic origin, skin colour or being Roma. In parallel, forced displacement remains historically high, which continues to shape local communities, schools, youth centres and informal youth spaces through new arrivals and changing group dynamics. In everyday youth work practice this translates into very concrete challenges: mixed groups where misunderstandings escalate quickly; young people withdrawing because they feel "different" or unwelcome; conflicts around values, identity or religion; stereotypes and micro-aggressions normalised in peer communication; and online tensions (hate speech, racist jokes, "us vs them" narratives) spilling into offline group life. EU human rights monitoring also continues to highlight discrimination, racism and hate crime as key fundamental rights concerns, while online hate speech remains a growing problem requiring better prevention and responses. CONNECT is needed because good intentions are not enough: intercultural learning requires structured methods, facilitation competence and safe approaches to sensitive topics. The idea of the project is to treat intercultural learning not as a "theme", but as a core youth work tool for inclusion, participation, conflict transformation and community cohesion. Through an international learning process, youth workers will exchange realities, practise methods in a safe training environment, and return home with tested formats ready for use with young people. Overall aim of the project is to strengthen youth workers' capacity to design and facilitate inclusive, safe and engaging intercultural learning processes that improve dialogue, reduce exclusion and support meaningful participation of diverse young people, including those with fewer opportunities. Objectives of CONNECT: Strengthen participants' competences in intercultural facilitation: creating psychologically safe environments, building trust, and guiding reflection processes that turn diversity into learning. Equip youth workers with practical anti-bias and inclusion methods to address stereotypes, discrimination and exclusion dynamics in youth groups, including strategies for accessible facilitation (simple language, visual support, multilingual peer support, varied learning modes). Develop skills for conflict transformation in multicultural settings: de-escalation tools, communication techniques, restorative approaches, and facilitation of difficult conversations relevant to real youth work cases. Ensure transfer to local practice: participants will co-create and test ready-to-use "session formats" (90-120 minutes) and leave with concrete action plans to implement them locally within 3 months, supported by peer mentoring and follow-up check-ins. Strengthen international cooperation and sustainability by building a community of practice between partner organisations and embedding the tested formats into regular youth work activities. Integrate Erasmus+ priorities in a "lived" way: inclusion (targeting youth workers working with fewer opportunities), responsible digital practice (moderation and safe dialogue online), and sustainable, low-waste training approaches. By investing in concrete facilitation skills and immediate local transfer, CONNECT will increase the quality of youth work in partner organisations and contribute to more inclusive local communities where young people feel respected, safe and able to participate across differences.
