Objectives

By implementing Democracy on Tracks – EU Journey, we aim to reduce the distance between young people with fewer opportunities and European democratic institutions. The project seeks to transform mobility into structured civic empowerment, ensuring that young people who face socio-economic, geographic, or educational barriers gain direct access to European governance spaces and develop the competences necessary for active participation. From a youth work perspective, the project responds to a clearly identified need: many young people, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, perceive political institutions as distant, complex, and inaccessible. This perception often results in low civic engagement, limited institutional literacy, and reduced confidence in participating in democratic processes. Youth work has a responsibility to bridge this gap by creating accessible learning environments that connect young people to decision-making structures in meaningful and practical ways. The first objective of the project is to strengthen democratic literacy among participants. Through structured visits to national and European institutions, including parliaments and judicial bodies, participants will gain a clear understanding of how legislation is developed, how institutions interact, and how citizens can influence policy. The aim is not only to provide information but to build analytical understanding of governance processes. The second objective is to increase civic self-efficacy. Many young people with fewer opportunities underestimate their capacity to engage in political dialogue. Through debates, simulations of legislative procedures, and structured reflection sessions, participants will practise expressing opinions, analysing arguments, and negotiating perspectives. Youth work methods such as experiential learning and peer-to-peer dialogue are used to ensure active participation rather than passive observation. The third objective is to promote inclusion in European mobility. Young people facing financial or social obstacles are often underrepresented in transnational programmes. By providing structured support, safeguarding measures, and full financial accessibility, the project ensures that participation does not depend on economic capacity or prior experience. This contributes to a more equitable implementation of DiscoverEU and Erasmus+ objectives. A further objective is to foster European identity based on shared values such as democracy, rule of law, and human rights. By connecting historical sites of division with contemporary institutions of cooperation, participants develop a contextual understanding of European integration as a peace and democracy project. Finally, the project aims to generate sustainable impact beyond the mobility itself. Through Youthpass recognition, structured competence reflection, and dissemination activities such as blog publication and local presentations, participants consolidate learning and share outcomes with their communities. In doing so, they become multipliers of European awareness and inclusive mobility opportunities. In summary, the project seeks to empower young people with fewer opportunities to understand, access, and engage with European democratic systems. It combines inclusion, civic education, experiential learning, and competence recognition in line with youth work principles. The overarching goal is to strengthen active citizenship and ensure that European mobility becomes a tool for democratic participation and social inclusion.
