Objectives

Tiny yet pervasive, microplastics have silently infiltrated our environment and our bodies, posing a growing threat to human health and ecosystems alike. According to the European Environment Agency, Europeans unknowingly consume an estimated 5 grams of microplastics per week, the weight of a credit card, through food, water, and even the air we breathe. Young people are particularly vulnerable, as exposure to microplastics carrying harmful chemicals, such as endocrine disruptors, may contribute to hormonal imbalances, developmental disorders, and long-term chronic illnesses. Despite the magnitude of this risk, awareness among youth remains alarmingly low, and everyday habits, from fast fashion to single-use plastics, continue to exacerbate the problem. The “Breaking the MicroPlastic Cycle” Youth Exchange seeks to confront this challenge by bringing together 42 young participants (ages 17–30) from 6 European countries (Greece, Serbia, Turkey, North Macedonia, Spain, and Germany), alongside 2 experienced facilitators from Greece. The project will equip youth with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required to understand, prevent, and mitigate microplastic pollution in their communities and daily lives. Through hands-on activities, collaborative workshops, clean-ups, and intercultural exchanges, participants will explore the sources and impacts of microplastics, develop sustainable consumption habits, and cultivate innovative problem-solving skills. Specific objectives: O1: Equip 42 young participants from 6 countries with knowledge of microplastics, their sources, prevalence, and harmful effects on human health, ecosystems, and food security, raising awareness of the urgency of plastic pollution O2: Explore and apply 5 practical techniques to reduce microplastic exposure, including sustainable consumption, zero-waste alternatives, recycling, mindful shopping, and creative reuse O3: Organize 3 problem-solving activities, such as clean-ups, upcycling, and campaigns during the YE, to reduce microplastic pollution and strengthen participants’ environmental awareness and sustainable habits O4: To enhance intercultural cooperation among the 42 participants from 6 countries, facilitating improvements in their understanding of cultural diversity and awareness of European values
