Objectives

Through the Queers on the Rails project, LevelUP Greece aims to provide 15 LGBTQIA+ young people (aged 18–21) with fewer opportunities the chance to explore Europe through three learning trips by rail, on equal footing with their DiscoverEU peers. The project's objectives, from a youth work perspective, are: a) To provide queer young people facing intersectional barriers (economic hardship, social isolation, discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity, geographical remoteness) with access to a learning travel experience they could not access on their own. b) To empower participants through understanding the history of queer movements in Europe (past), strengthening their confidence in expressing their identity (present), and building peer support networks (future). c) To develop practical life skills: project management, teamwork, financial management, navigation of digital travel tools, and critical thinking. d) To strengthen participants' European identity through experiential discovery of how queer identity is lived across different European societies. e) To inspire sustainable travel habits through extensive use of rail travel. f) To create a replicable DiscoverEU model designed by queer young people, for queer young people. From a youth work practice perspective, the project applies non-formal education principles (experiential learning, reflection, active participation), uses co-creation as its core methodology by giving young people a leading role in trip planning and implementation, and strikes the right balance between guidance and autonomy - two concepts central to the DiscoverEU Inclusion Action. The dual group leadership model - one leader for logistics and non-formal education facilitation, one for psychological support and reflection - reflects a holistic understanding of youth work where learning and wellbeing are inseparable.
