Objectives

Addressing the crisis of burnout in activism We aim to fundamentally strengthen the emotional infrastructure of youth-led environmental movements across Europe. We observe that while young people possess immense passion for climate justice, they often lack the tools to navigate the severe emotional pressure and interpersonal conflicts that arise in high-stakes volunteer environments. By implementing "Resilient Communities," we will directly address the high rates of burnout and group fragmentation that threaten the sustainability of youth civic engagement. Our goal is to create a paradigm shift where internal well-being is prioritized as a prerequisite for external political impact. We will ensure that youth workers are no longer overwhelmed by the emotional intensity of their groups but are instead empowered to harness that energy for cohesive action. Professionalizing emotional facilitation From the perspective of youth work practice, our central objective is to professionalize the facilitation of emotional processes and conflict transformation. We will equip youth workers with the specific competence to recognize the early somatic signs of tension within a group before they escalate into toxicity. We will introduce "Radical Honesty" not merely as a concept, but as a rigorous, experiential methodology adapted for youth work settings. Participants will master the skill of "holding space"—creating psychologically safe environments where young activists can express fear, anger, and vulnerability without judgment. We will transform how youth workers handle disagreement, moving them from conflict avoidance to constructive conflict engagement. This means they will return to their organizations capable of guiding difficult conversations that deepen trust rather than eroding it. Methodological innovation and resilience We will expand the methodological toolbox available to European youth workers by integrating somatic and nature-based practices into standard group coordination. We recognize that cognitive tools alone are insufficient for managing climate anxiety and organizational stress. Therefore, we will train participants to regulate their own nervous systems, ensuring they can model stability and resilience for the young people they support. We want to achieve a standard of practice where self-care and community care are structural, not optional. By fostering these skills, we will enable youth workers to support young volunteers with a trauma-informed approach, ensuring that the spaces they facilitate are inclusive, regenerative and safe for diverse identities. Sustainable impact on youth organizations Ultimately, we intend to embed these competences within the organizational cultures of our partners and their wider networks. We will empower participants to act as confident multipliers who will adapt and transfer these communication tools into their local contexts. We will produce tangible resources that allow these methods to be replicated, ensuring that the benefits extend beyond the immediate participants. By strengthening the resilience of the youth workers who hold the center of these movements, we will secure the long-term sustainability of the environmental youth sector itself. We envision a future where young people can remain active in democratic life without sacrificing their mental health, supported by a generation of youth workers skilled in the art of resilient community building.
