Objectives

Youngsters of Puumala goes Europe 2 is the second DiscoverEU Inclusion Action project implemented by the youth services of the Municipality of Puumala. In the project, two groups of young people aged 18–21 from Puumala will undertake a train journey across Europe. Puumala is a small archipelago municipality in South Savo, characterised by long distances to urban centres. Due to geographical factors, young people from Puumala are considered young people with fewer opportunities. The municipality’s population is declining and ageing. After completing comprehensive school, young people are required to move to a nearby city for the school week, while they usually return to Puumala during weekends and school holidays. Supporting young people during this key transition phase towards independence is regarded as particularly important in the municipality. The Youngsters of Puumala goes Europe 2 project promotes young people’s equal opportunities to travel in Europe, where they will explore Europe’s past, present, and future challenges and opportunities. First-hand experiences and learning through travel strengthen a sense of European identity and deepen the understanding of shared European values. The project supports young people’s independence as well as trust-based cooperation and group cohesion. In addition, the project aligns with the Municipality of Puumala’s strategic objective of supporting young people during transitional life stages. In the youth services of the Municipality of Puumala, the focus is not only on providing leisure activities and strengthening young people’s participation, but also on enabling the realisation of young people’s own ideas and initiatives. The core principle of the work is to act with young people, not for them. The DiscoverEU Inclusion Action offers Puumala’s youth services an opportunity to support the participation of rural youth and to implement young people’s own plans and goals through youth work methods.
