This project idea was brought up in an informal meeting between two academic musicians, Hélène Huon from Music’Ensemble and Magdalen Angjelovski (Mag) a young musician from Macédonia, both with the same passion-music. The connection was made during a YouthExchange at the Ecovillage Grain&Sens in June 2025 during a small music festival part of the program. Mag shared his path through music and Erasmus+ mobilities experience and how it helped him to build his identity as a young musician and a young man in transition. They exchanged about two music tools which help people form all horizons to develop their creativity and their personnal identity: Rythm&Sign and Soundpainting. This project “United in Rythm” is based on this desire to support youth to discover, explore and affirm their identity throughout a collective music experience. The project idea arose from the need of young people for opportunities to explore and develop their creativity outside of formal education. The need for methods and the space that allow youth to create across artistic disciplines in a collaborative way. The need for breaking the old and limiting beliefs of being together and co-creating opens the space for this project to take place and give the participants the freedom to express and integrate the new parts of themself which they’ll discover throughout the time of the YE. One of the strong aspects of this project, that we find so, is its implementation taking place among nature in the eco-village of Grain&Sens. This is a community of people who are cultivating the spirit of nature connectedness and nature preservation by sharing their vast knowledge and experience with the visitors and participants, creating a truly life-changing and awareness shaping experiences. Integrating their ways of living with a low footprint on nature and ways of functioning in the community, within the YE itself will complement the effect on the participants that we want to make. It is also a multi-cultural community open and welcoming for young people with different life views, ways of thinking with a great allowance which enable young people to explore their own individual path without judgment. Another reason for upbringing such a project idea related to music is that, oftentimes, the language appears to be a barrier for communication in youth projects, however non-verbal communication methods like the rhythm and sign is an inclusive opportunity for everyone to take part and co-create. As many young people are facing difficulties to travel and have intercultural experiences which are the base for forming a more respectful and understanding attitude for people from different cultures and backgrounds, the music and rhythm are the most neutral terrain to come together and bridge different cultures, uniting in similarities. The terrain where differences will be enriching the common creation. Due to the experience with the Music’Ensemble in working with young people, we’ve noticed that the young people lack safe space to try out or practice their leadership skills. The innovative methods of O’passo, Rhythm and sign and Soundpainting offer a no pressure environment that allows the individual to express their leadership in a creative way, enabling them to lead a group, make decisions during the creative process and receive feedback. In the so-called New Reality we are experiencing rapid changes on a daily basis that require adaptability and resilience of the young individuals. The Soundpainting methods through spontaneous composition teaches the individual to respond creatively to unexpected challenges, allowing them to become aware of their amount of flexibility in dealing with such situations. Another need that we indicated for implementing this project and creating this safe space, comes from dealing with their insecurities for self-expression. Many young people are facing difficulties to step out and perform in front of an audience. By creating this safe space for them to practice and allow themselves to lean into the experience, through the creative practices of the youth exchange, will be beneficial for building their self-confidence. Lastly, but not least, we find that there is a lack of non-formal learning opportunities where young people can engage in multidisciplinary art experiences. We want to make access for young talents that maybe shy away or are facing obstacles to step into the world of music and arts. This project is open equally for experienced young musicians as well as for beginners.
