By implementing this youth exchange, the project “Living Together on an Island in the World” aims to offer young people with fewer opportunities an educational, intercultural and inclusive European mobility experience. The project enables them to step outside their usual environment and to experience European diversity in a concrete way through an outermost European territory: Réunion Island. From a youth work perspective, the project is based on a non-formal education approach that places young people at the centre of the learning process. Participants are actively involved in the preparation, implementation and evaluation of the activities in order to strengthen their autonomy, self-confidence, ability to cooperate and capacity to take initiative. The methods used rely on experiential learning, active participation, individual and collective expression, and reflection on lived experiences. The project pursues the following objectives: – to develop young people’s social and intercultural competences, in particular communication, cooperation and respect for diversity; – to foster open-mindedness and mutual understanding by exposing participants to different lifestyles, cultures and territories; – to promote inclusion and active participation of young people with fewer opportunities by enabling them to take part in a structured and meaningful European mobility experience; – to strengthen civic engagement and reflection on living together by empowering young people to become active actors in their personal development and in their local environment. The exchange is based on a variety of complementary activities: intercultural and collaborative workshops, shared cooking as a tool for cultural exchange and transmission, moving debates on living together and citizenship, discovery activities of the Réunion Island territory, and collective creative actions (visual materials and joint productions). Daily reflection and evaluation sessions will enable participants to take a step back from their experiences and to recognise and value the competences acquired, notably through the Youthpass. The project brings together 26 young people aged 14 to 20, with 13 participants from each country (France – Réunion Island and Belgium). All participants are young people with fewer opportunities, coming from rural areas or disadvantaged urban neighbourhoods. A balanced gender representation will be ensured. The continuity with previous exchanges allows the consolidation of existing achievements while further deepening intercultural learning and the active participation of young people. At the end of the project, participants will have strengthened their social, intercultural and civic competences, increased their self-confidence and autonomy, and developed a better understanding of the diversity of European realities. The project will also have a lasting impact on the partner organisations and the local territory by strengthening youth work practices, European cooperation and the dissemination of the values of solidarity, respect and living together promoted by the Erasmus+ programme.
