The project “Between Volcanoes and Forests: European Youth in Dialogue – Crossed Perspectives” aims to implement a cross youth exchange between Belgium and La Réunion, based on the principles of youth work and non-formal education. This project is structured around reciprocity and includes two successive mobilities: a first exchange hosting Belgian young people in La Réunion, followed by a second mobility enabling young people from La Réunion to travel to Belgium. This cross-exchange dynamic ensures partnership balance, deeper mutual understanding and genuine co-construction of learning outcomes. From a youth work perspective, the project aims to: strengthen the active participation of young people in all phases of the project (preparation, implementation, evaluation and dissemination); develop their autonomy, initiative and sense of responsibility; promote experiential learning and critical reflection through non-formal education methods; foster intercultural dialogue and understanding of European territorial realities; encourage civic engagement and a sense of belonging to an inclusive and diverse Europe. The cross-exchange format allows participants to experience both roles – as hosts and as guests – which reinforces the educational dimension of the project. They learn how to welcome others, adapt to new environments, cooperate across cultures and reflect on cultural differences in varied contexts. Therefore, the project goes beyond a single mobility experience and represents a sustainable youth work approach aimed at empowering young people to engage in dialogue, cooperate effectively and take an active role in European society.
