Through ECO-POP, our organisations aim to empower young people from disadvantaged backgrounds in working-class neighbourhoods by supporting them to become active citizens engaged with pollution issues at local, national and European level. As youth workers, we recognise that these young people are often the first to be exposed to environmental consequences (air pollution, degradation of public spaces, noise pollution, water and soil quality), while being insufficiently involved in decision-making processes and ecological transition actions. The primary objective of ECO-POP is to develop a deep understanding among young people of the different forms of pollution (air, water, soil and noise) by addressing their causes, their consequences on health, the living environment and social inequalities, as well as the responses implemented at local, national and European level. Through non-formal education methods specific to youth work, young people will be encouraged to analyse their everyday environment, identify sources of pollution in their neighbourhoods and make the link with local, national and European public policies on the environment and health. The second objective is to promote European citizenship and intercultural dialogue by setting up collaborative activities between groups of young people from two partner countries. The project is based on the belief that intercultural encounters are a powerful lever for learning and open-mindedness. By working together on a common issue (pollutions) young people will be able to compare their realities and understand that these issues transcend national borders. This cooperation will help develop a sense of belonging to a European community and build a collective project based on the values of solidarity and shared responsibility. Finally, the project aims to support young people so that they can become a driving force for change in their local area. Based on their findings, they will be supported in designing concrete projects that address the pollution issues identified, whether these involve awareness-raising activities, entrepreneurial projects, eco-friendly developments or local community initiatives. This support will be based on the development of key skills, particularly green, digital and entrepreneurial skills (teamwork, project management, creativity, initiative). In line with youth work principles, the emphasis will be on autonomy, active participation and the promotion of acquired skills, in order to strengthen young people's self-confidence and long-term commitment. Through these objectives, ECO-POP aims to contribute to youth work practices rooted in local realities. These youth work practices are also intended to be inclusive and empowering. The aim is not only to enable young people to better understand the issues surrounding pollution, but also to recognise themselves as legitimate citizens, capable of taking action, cooperating and positively influencing their environment. The project is also part of youth work that uses popular education, socio-cultural codes and the interests of young people from working-class neighbourhoods. This youth work has been carried out by social centres for decades and is an effective methodology for mobilising young people, arousing their interest, providing them with a safe environment and a relationship of trust, so that they can engage with the issues of pollution and ecological transition in general.
